Lucian lay on the dark red plastic track, his pants soaked and dripping with water. With one leg bent, he lay inere. Calista bit her lip and reached to unfasten his belt.

Lucian’s intense gaze fixated on her face. He squinted slightly and teased, “Were you planning to stand there and watch me freeze to death if I hadn’t called you just now?”

Lucian believed that Calista wouldn’t have approached him voluntarily without the security guard’s intervention.

Calista calmly worked on unfastening his belt and steadily replied, “You wouldn’t have frozen to death with the security guards around.”

The security guard, affiliated with the Willowbrook Park Management, would undoubtedly be held accountable if someone were to freeze to death right under his nose.

Lucian found himself at a loss for words. With a subtle click, Calista deftly unfastened the metal buckle of Lucian’s belt.

Suddenly, Lucian’s strong hand firmly stopped her as she moved to undo the button on his trousers.

He stood up and replied irritably, “I’ll handle it myself.”

Calista let him be. Lucian didn’t bother picking up the fallen pants since he had spare clothes in his car.

The owner of the rear–ended car was still waiting there.

When he saw Lucian approaching, he quickly took out his phone, pointed to the photos, and said, ” You were driving in flip–flops, and I’ve got it all on camera. Rear–ending is partially your fault, too.”

Lucian’s already frayed temper reached its breaking point. His expression suddenly grew cold and threatening, akin to a sharp, menacing blade.

“I didn’t have any shoes on while driving, and no matter the sudden brake, the blame for the rear- end collision falls squarely on you. You must contact your insurance company to sort this out.”

The man faltered, lost for words.

Lucian retrieved some clothes from the trunk, went to the backseat to change, and then called his

As a precaution, Lucian was taken to the hospital for a check–up despite being conscious after being in the cold lake for a long time.

Calista was convinced by the security to join Lucian on his journey. She sat silently on the ambulance seat, fixated on Lucian on the stretcher. The drawn curtains obscured their surroundings.

“Surprisingly, you play the hero,” she remarked indifferently.

Lucian shot her a disdainful look and replied with a cold “hmph.”

“If you can’t speak without the sarcasm, then maybe just keep quiet and spare me the snide remarks,” he retorted.

Calista fell silent and retrieved her phone, leaning back in her chair as she scrolled through

Twitter.

The incident had already made headlines and was gaining traction. She absentmindedly tapped into the detailed view and briefly glanced at the pictures.

One of the pictures prominently displayed her as she carefully unfastened the metal buckle of Lucian’s belt. Calista stared at the photo and couldn’t help but mutter a curse under her breath.

Damn it! Despite the obscured identity, the blurring was hastily done, and anyone familiar with her could easily recognize her.

Lucian’s brooding gaze fell on Calista. The inside of the vehicle remained eerily quiet, the only sound being the soft whoosh of the air conditioning vents.

“Why did you tell Mom you would jump into the lake?” Lucian broke the silence by asking.

Calista slid her fingers across the phone’s screen and then looked up with a piercing gaze.

“So, did you jump into the lake because you thought the drowned woman was me?”

“Will you stay by my side at the hospital and care for me forever if I say yes?” Lucian joked.

“No. I’d think you’re foolish.”

Although they had been married for three years, it seemed absurd to Calista that Lucian would

Her heart raced as she continued, “You’re kind–hearted. You risked your life to save me on such a cold day.

Finally, Lucian opened his eyes and glanced at Calista at the payment counter.

I’ve mistaken you for someone else,” he deadpanned.

A faint blush tinged the young woman’s pale face out of embarrassment.

Lucian remained silent. His lack of response made Charlotte’s expression contort with pain.

“I jumped into the lake intentionally today because I found out that my boyfriend and best friend …

Suddenly, Lucian interrupted her, clearly irritated as he furrowed his brows, “It would be great if you could pick a quieter spot for your drama next time. Please avoid dragging others into it. Your parents would be mourning and dealing with significant compensation if anything had gone awry today due to your recklessness.”

Charlotte’s pained expression remained frozen as she gazed at the cold, heartless man before her Het emotions seemed less turbulent than when she struggled in the lake

The door to the examination room opened, and Charlotte, in a state of urgency, was wheeled inside. Before leaving, she shot Lucian a glare.

Lucian remained unfazed, making her look like an erratic clown. Calista looked at Lucian with confusion.

“Why does she seem so hostile toward you?”

Lucian stared at her coldly.

“What are you trying to say?”

“Did you perhaps say something offensive to her?”

Most people would at least express gratitude to their savior, even those with a death wish. The woman’s emotional outburst and disdainful look puzzled Calista.

Lucian stared at her coldly for several minutes before laughing sarcastically.

“Calista, are you questioning me for the sake of a stranger who has some mental issues?”
