While the quartet who controlled the organization of masterminds was still discussing how to test

Charlie, he had already arrived at the entrance of the Shaw residence.

The current Shaw residence was not much different from the Shaw

residence more than 20 years ago.

Only the trees inside were taller and luxuriant, and the maroon–colored doors were repainted with a

brighter color.

The memory he hid deep within his mind was awakened instantly, making his eyes turn red.

Twenty three years had passed, and he was finally back.

Those years of nightmarish experience he had been through made him quickly collect himself. He

walked forward with gifts in his hands and kicked the door.

“Open the door. I’m here!”

That was Zachary’s favorite saying. Whenever Zachary came to play with him, Zachary greeted him in

such a way.

The door of the Shaw residence soon opened, and Bruce showed up.

“Zachary, you’re here. Please come in.”

As he spoke, he took the gifts from Charlie with a gentle smile.

“Zachary, you haven’t been here for many years. Do you still remember the way?”

For Zachary, he had left Acocester 17 years ago.

At that time, he was already ten years old and remembered the Shaw residence quite well.

Charlie walked through the familiar veranda and said with a smile, “Of course I remember. After all, I

spent more time at the Shaw residence than at my house.”

He deliberately patted his leg after that. “This broken leg is also etched in my mind.”

Bruce smiled awkwardly in response. “Zachary, you were too naughty at that time. Ms. Yancey was so

enraged by you that she hit you hard.”

“It was my fault. At that time, I thought that thin and weak girl was a

“Is your leg okay now?”

Charlie shrugged as he replied, “Nothing wrong with it except feeling a little uncomfortable on rainy

While they were talking, they arrived at the main hall.

When they passed by the yard earlier, Charlie took a glance at the peach tree that covered half of the

sky.

An orange tree used to be there.

He and Aiden planted it together. When it started producing oranges, he climbed on the tree to pick

them and fell down.

Bruce noticed his gaze and explained, “Ms. Yancey likes peaches as well as peach blossoms, so Mrs.

Shaw moved the orange tree to the backyard and planted peach trees here.”

Charlie suddenly understood and nodded. “No wonder! I remember an orange tree was planted there

before I went to Jacaster. Mrs. Shaw is so kind to that cold and distant girl.”

In truth, he had learned from Zachary all the vivid memories Zachary had before Zachary went to

Jacaster.

Although it was not detailed enough, he could still fool the others with his brain injury if they suspected

him.

Bruce smiled. “Because Ms. Yancey deserves it.”

After saying that, he entered the main hall with Charlie.

Elaine was sitting upright on the couch. She stared at the completely different–looking Charlie and

reached out to him.

“Zachary, you have suffered a lot.”

Charlie felt a lump in his throat upon hearing that. He resisted the urge to rush forward and hug Elaine

and walked forward slowly.

He held her hand and said heartlessly, “Only old people like you always talk about ‘suffering.‘ No

matter what we have experienced in the past, it’s a life treasure for young people like us.”

“I haven’t seen you for more than a decade, yet you’re good in your words now. Back then, that mouth

of yours always made others feel like beating you up.”

“I can still make you feel like beating me with my mouth now.”

Elaine was amused with his words. “You are still good at talking nonsense, as always.”

She dragged Charlie over to sit beside her. Looking at his face, she asked, “Zachary, what did the

professor of the burn unit say? Can it be cured?”

Charlie touched his bumpy face indifferently. “These old wounds are not easy to cure. They need a

large area of skin graft and will take a long time. to recover.”

“You silly child. You should have gone home for treatment immediately after you escaped from the

human trafficker back then.”

“You know my temper at that time. I couldn’t lose face and wasn’t aware that I myself was st* pid. Not

to mention I destroyed myself, I even made my parents worry about me for so many years.”

Hearing that, Elaine asked, “How are your parents? Are they doing well?”

Charlie put away his cynicism and nodded. “They are in good health. Some time ago, they said they

would come and visit old friends here in Acocester. However, they are too busy with their work and

can’t leave just yet.”

One of the reasons why the Jennings family moved to Jacaster was that they had a grudge against the

Shaw family. But, on the other hand, they had also been promoted and transferred.

Although Acocester was a good place, it was not as good as the capital.

After exchanging words with Elaine for a while, Charlie asked, “Mrs. Shaw, it was Dummy who invited

me over. Why isn’t she around?” Hearing the word “Dummy,” Elaine poked Charlie’s head angrily.

“Zachary, you’re almost 30 now. Why are you still so untactful?”

Charlie did that on purpose.

Feeling the familiar act, he suppressed the excitement and sadness in his heart and raised his

eyebrows.

“Mrs. Shaw, this is called nostalgia.”

“If Cecilia gets pissed off later and beat you with a stick, will that be called nostalgia too?”

“Well… I’d better forget it then.”

As soon as Charlie finished speaking, Cecilia left the kitchen and went to the main hall.

She looked at the disfigured man talking and laughing with Elaine and

The man before her gave her a completely different feeling from the Zachary she knew.

while eating.”

“All right. Zachary, help me up.”

Charlie got up and helped the unwell Elaine up.

His actions were gentle and natural.

As he helped Elaine toward Cecilia, he mocked, “Dummy, is your cooking edible?”

“I think it’s not as delicious as stir–fried meat with sticks.”

“Gosh, the girl who used to be silent is so sharp–tongued now.”

Cecilia took Elaine’s hand from Charlie and helped her to the dining

room.

Even so, she did not forget to counter Charlie, “At least I’m better than you. You have been through

hardships before but still haven’t learned your lesson.”

Charlie followed behind them.

Looking at Cecilia, who followed Elaine’s pace and took good care of her, he knew why his family

treated her as a treasure.

One’s character could be seen from every detail of the person’s behavior, and Cecilia indeed deserved

the care of the Shaw family.

As a member of the Shaw family, he would also protect her.

Before arriving at the dining room, Charlie could already smell the tempting aroma of the dishes.

He took a deep sniff of the aroma and said with a smile, “It seems that I’m lucky today. I hope you guys

won’t lose your appetite because of my face later.”
