Evelyn POV

I could feel some kind of weird electricity between Reuben and I. It was like a humming sound, a buzz. This closeness was not only suffocating but electrifying. Why did he get under my skin so much, what was it about him? About me…

He was wearing aftershave, I was that close I could smell its slightly still potent essence as the scent made my nostrils flare. It had a spice to it, which when added to his sweet leathery scent was putting my wolf into overdrive.

She was urging me to place my nose into the nook of his neck and get a better intake of the mixed scents. To even lick his skin to get a better taste.

I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Even after everything he was the most beautiful man I had ever met and Rex shared his beauty.

My boy was my daily reminder that I needed to raise him differently. That beauty didn’t always mean kindness. Sometimes beauty was a mask to hide beastliness.

My lips felt dry under his stare, as soon as my tongue runs across my lips a growl rumbles lowly within his chest. I go to move my hands but they remain pinned against my back. Legs Evelyn, you still have your legs.

As if already reading my mind, when I go to kick him in the groin he moves a leg quickly in-between mine. His upper thigh now pressed firmly against my warm and vibrating lower core.

“Let me go!” I demand as a snarl.

“And get attacked? No chance of that sweetheart.” His voice held power and if I wasn’t so angry at him, I’d be pushing him up against this desk instead. I hear him smell my hair, his nose now placed near my temple.

“You’ve been holding back…” He comments as he pulls his face away to look me in the eyes.

“You’re powerful. I’ve never met another alpha that holds a similar aura to mine. But you keep your emotions in here….” He strokes my forehead, brushing away a strand of hair and tucking it behind my ear.”

“…and here.” He places his hand on my chest, on my heart. I look down to his hand placed on my chest, sparks form as his palm connects with my skin. That same humming intensifies and it feels like a magnetic pull.

“You need to let your emotions out more, to let your wolf channel more.”

“There’s a reason I remain in control Reuben. Why I refuse to let emotions guide me too much. Kept unchecked emotions can lead to disaster. But you know all about that don’t you?” My jaw tenses at my final words.

His eyebrows furrow as his eyes keep flickering between mine and my lips. He doesn’t want to miss a word I am saying.

“I want to see her!” I demand, again trying to get out of his hold.

“No…”

“I want to know what she had planned. What lengths she would have gone to with my son..”

“Our son and I said no.”

He finally releases me. That moment of intensity between us gone.

“Why?” I sigh out. “Because I’m not putting you in harm’s way again.” Putting me in harm’s way? I made the decision to get Rex back. I am responsible for my safety No him.

“Well I’m not asking Reuben. She’s committed crimes against my pack, against a future Alpha of an alliance. Goddess so help me, I’ll march all my warriors here and take her by force!”

Reuben POV

It’s not the right time I know this, not during a crisis, but I couldn’t help but enjoy her demands. She was sexy when angry…demanding was cute on her.

Her tensed jaw somehow made her lips plump up, making them even more kissable. When she licked her dry lips I just wanted to run my tongue across her mouth to lubricate it for her.

I could see the hurt in her eyes.

Fuck!

Why didn’t I see if four years ago. I didn’t mean to push her aside if that’s how she felt. Vicky had almost died in the attack on her pack, they even killed her own mate…the Alpha.

I was the first person she came to for help and I just needed Evelyn to sit tight for a few weeks while I helped Vicky.

But having admitted she was responsible for kidnapping Rex, I can’t believe she would do anything so callous and risky. And who was she giving commands to? It can’t be my men, so who has she been commanding.

Vicky had a history of acting before thinking and when we were together I had to pull her out of a few sticky holes. But to think she would thank me by knowingly harming my wife and child…

Just the memory of Evelyn laying at the bottom of the stairs made me shiver.

How could she be so cold hearted? I had rushed to the scream, to Evelyn but she was already unconscious and Vicky screamed for my help. I just acted in

the moment for the first person that called my name…but Evelyn took that as rejection. A rejection that forced her to lie and leave with my unborn child. To protect the twins from me. Perhaps I had become my father. It would seem I had in her eyes. 2

Now she is demanding to see her, but she won’t go anywhere near her. Evelyn or the twins. She needs to pay for her crimes.

“I’ll go see her.” I make it clear this was not up for discussion.

“I’m quite capable…”

“I’m not saying you aren’t. But this is my pack, I’m the Alpha here. I’ll find out what she had planned and then we can go from there.”

I had ordered that Vicky be held in the holding cells because I didn’t want to cause a commotion in the pack. Not until I knew more.

She was to be placed alone in solitary confinement and await questioning. I had two men watching her at all times.

As I walk towards her cell, the two men on shift submit their necks to me. Nate had put an experienced warrior with a newly trained one. He can’t me much older than eighteen.

I make it clear to them with no words that I was entering the cell. They followed my command, opening the door for me and bringing a chair in for me to sit on.

She was laying down on the bed, facing the wall. Her legs curled up into the foetal position. She was trying to look innocent, make me feel sorry for her. It was a kick in the gut that I was starting to realise just how much she might have played me. How I’ve been manipulated by her. 3

“I know you’re awake, tell me everything.” I command. She wasn’t a pack member but she could still feel my command. I was the Alpha King and only Evelyn’s aura was a close second.

“I took the child for you, for us. I thought it would be a quick trade. Him back and the Silver Moon alliance disbanded. I didn’t know it was her. I didn’t know she was alive, that she was the alpha. How could I? You said you saw the flames yourself.” She turns to me, her eyes red and puffy as she twists the corner hem of her top.

“Did you pull her down the stairs, knowing she was pregnant?” I make my words slow and stern. This was important. She looks to me with a slight gulp hitting her throat.

“We were arguing…she was in a hurry. I don’t know. I lost my footing. I could have reached out to her to balance myself.” She cuts herself off when I growl at her answer.

So that would be a yes then. Who was this woman? She was never like this before…was she? Was I so infatuated as a young man that I ignored her very flawed behaviour.

“She was flustered about you learning she was pregnant, yes that’s right I remember now…I found out she was pregnant from Noah and threatened to tell you…”

Anger spreads through me like wildfire.

“My children Vicky, they are my children. Cut the crap! You will remain here until I can decide what to do!”
