THE CROWN - EPISODE 8
The sunset signified that it was a new day, an Eke market day to be precised.
Yes, it was the third Eke market day since the dance and the day of the supposed marriage to the crowned prince.
Nothing has been heard about it, I guess even the king was scared of the gods anger if he takes a wrong step.
So who am I to be able to do anything about the gods decision.
For the past days I’ve isolated myself because of the tripled attention and criticisms I get now.
Only a few brave ones are able to say it to my face.
Mother said I was already wearing the beads of the Royal family.
She said it’s blessed and purified by the gods so whoever wears it is respected.
My parents are neither happy or sad about this whole thing while I on the other hand feel confused and lost.
I bumped into someone
“Sorry” I said quickly
“Adenike be careful, you’re lost in thoughts again” it was Mmesoma
“Mmesoma I’m so confused, I don’t know what to do. I don’t deserve to be the Queen and I don’t even want to be Queen”
“You don’t deserve it? Why? You deserve the best irrespective of cultural differences, you’re not an outcast”
She held my shoulders.
I raised my head to her face and she smiled at me, I hugged her closing my eyes to relax a bit.
She rubbed my back…
I opened my eyes and Emenike was standing there
I slowly disengaged from the hug, he walked closer to us
“Hi Mmesoma.. Adenike” he looked from Mmesoma back to me
Mmesoma kept quiet staring at me to make the first move.
After the dance, I distanced myself from everything and anything to avoid seeing Emenike
I was angry at the joke he made of our friendship, it was disheartening.
He waited for me in streams and all but I’ve not been able to bring myself to let go.
I had too much to think about
“Mmesoma let’s go” I said trying to walk away.
He grabbed my arm and pulled me back, I turned and met his eyes
He was sorry, that I knew… Even without saying it his eyes said it all.
I want to let go or rather I’ve moved on from the lies but I have so much to think about
“I’m sorry, I don’t care how much this will take but I’m ready to keep apologizing to you every day” he said
I sighed
“Emenike I don’t know why you did that but I can’t pull myself together from all the shocks”
“I know and that’s why I don’t intend on pressuring you. I don’t have any reasonable explanation as to why I did that, I’ve always wanted to feel what it’s like to be a commoner without so much responsibility”
He told me…
I just stared at him, I didn’t know what to say
“Yes I’m the prince but that doesn’t stop us from being friends ”
He added and held my shoulders
“I want to forgive you and let it all go, infact in my heart I know I’ve forgiven you but this forceful marriage thing and regrets on why I joined the dance at all and why I…..”
I lost breathe, I stopped talking and looked down.
He held my jaw and raised my face to him
“I want to help you, I’m equally not happy about you getting married to my brother”
“What do you mean?” I questioned
He said nothing but stared
He pulled me into his chest and hugged me, I was surprised but I needed a hug badly so I gave in

“No member of the Royal family should get married to an outcast, the maiden in question is not even from Igbo land”
“It’s an abomination ÀRU!! tufiakwa”
“My elders, what do you suggest we do about this?” The King said calmly
His voice spoke of confusion, his eyes read anger and his heart pleaded unto the gods.
“Igwe!! May the gods grant you long life. Igwe I suggest we summon the Ezemmuo, the eye of the gods is in a better position to answer our questions”
“My daughter has been devasted, she has been chosen by the prince yet an untrue maiden is after her rights as a true daughter of the soil” Onuwu added
They were all not having it, ranting and dropping opinions that might have no effect on the god’s decision.
“Father!”
The prince barged in, Emenike… Second son to the king
“My elders, I great you all”
He greeted and also bowed to his father, the King.
“Great warrior of our land, the second mighty seed from my grions. What is it my son?”
He was an angry king but not a loveless father.
“Father, may you live long. Father the maiden chosen by the gods”
He started
“What about her?”
“I intend to make her mine”
“”Abomination!!! Aru!!!”
The elders chorused
“What do you mean by that?” The King questioned
He heard to the meaning of the words but he was not ready to understand, he didn’t want to
“I intend to make her my princess, to bear my children and stand beside me till I join my ancestors”
The King stood up slowly
It was too much to apprehend
“She is an outcast, she can not bear a royal blood” the king said angrily
“I want her to be my wife, My brother can not have her as is.. I won’t let that happen”
Emenike replied
“The maiden chosen by the gods….”
The crowned prince barged in too
“I do not want her… The maiden I have chosen will be the next Queen of Umuagwo”
“Both of you shut up!!!” The King yelled
The elders trembled at the anger of his voice
The princes stood still
“Neither of you will get married to that maiden” the King said
“To my brother, yes she won’t but to me? She’ll be mine. Excuse me father” Emenike bowed before walking away
“Emenike come back here! Emenike!” Igwe yelled after him but he walked away still
“Father, summon the chief priest.. something must be done about the gods decision”
He bowed before leaving too
“The danger that threatens the hunting dog, threatens the hunter too so please calm down my King”
“Let us summon Ezemmuo, I’m sure something can be done about all of this”
“Something must be done”
The kinsmen tried to calm the king.
He sighed and walked away to his Chambers.
