I grabbed his phone to see who sent the message. Oswald came back and snatched the phone out of my hand. He glanced at it and said, “It’s from Lelia.” I stared at him in shock. “Are you hiding something from me?”
I asked, feeling unsure. The message was brief: “Does she know?” But I could sense there was more behind the simple words. Obviously, they were hiding something from me. And the sender seemed close to Oswald. I stared at Oswald carefully. My woman’s sixth sense gave me an ominous feeling.
Oswald laughed and threw the phone back on the nightstand. He pulled me up and hugged me tightly before kissing me. “You’re paranoid. We’re talking about our mom, not you. Lelia used me as an excuse to ask for money again.”
Lelia Price was Oswald’s younger sister. She was a sickly girl and was spoiled like those rich girls. Although she was in her twenties, she didn’t have a steady job and only cared about having fun and shopping. I huffed, “Again? Does she forget who gave your mom the money?” Oswald smiled and bent down to carry me up. I was still naked, and he walked toward the bathroom while kissing me.
“OK. I know that is your money. I’m lucky to have such a thoughtful wife.” I was pleased as I had always been generous to his family. In my opinion, the secret to a happy family was to love your family. After fooling around in the shower, I was utterly satisfied and had forgotten all my questions and displeasures. Lying in Oswald’s arms, I brought up buying a house near a good school again. The issue haunted me for a long time. We had lived in this small apartment since we were married.
But I wanted Jocelyn to have a better educational background. She was about to go to elementary school, yet there weren’t any good schools in our neighborhood. We saved enough money for a house. But Oswald kept on stalling it. He said that River City was developing quickly. We needed to find a perfect location in case we picked wrong and had to move constantly.

But when I talked about buying a house this time, Oswald didn’t raise an objection. He patted me on the shoulder and kissed my forehead. “Fine. I’ll keep an eye out for a suitable house and bring you to see it when I find one.
It’s up to you.” I liked his answer and fell asleep, dreaming about a beautiful big house. The next morning. As soon as I dropped Jocelyn in kindergarten, I received my friend Eleanor Myers’ call. She asked me to meet her at our usual spot. I gladly said yes and hailed a taxi. Eleanor was my only friend in River City besides my family. We told each other everything. It was rare for her to call me this early as she was a busy woman as an agent of a media company. I walked inside our favorite cafe and immediately noticed Eleanor. She was sitting in the corner with a laptop on the desk. Her fair hands danced on the keyboard, and she looked amazing when the morning sunlight shone on her. Eleanor waved when she saw me. I hurried over and asked playfully, “Are you having a slow day? Why do you ask me out so early?” Eleanor rolled her eyes and glanced at me. “Because I care about you.”
“How sweet.” I sat down and took a sip of the coffee she ordered for me without asking. “You’re a busy businesswoman while I’m a free housewife.”
“Shame on you. Oswald spoils you so badly that you have lost your edge. A friendly reminder. Stay alert. Don’t be st* pid.” She shot me a pointed look. My heart sank when I heard her warning. I asked, “What? What do you mean?” Eleanor lowered her eyes to look at her laptop, as if she was covering for something. “Nothing. I just wanted to take a jab at you.” She suddenly looked up and said, “I saw Oswald two days ago.”
