“Darren, if we got divorced, would you still care for me? Would you still regard me as your family?”

Nora’s head snapped up in panic, then she ran quickly to Darren before squatting down in front of him. She held his hands and looked affectionately up at him.

“Darren, will you ignore me after our divorce? Although we are going to be divorced, I care about you a great deal. And I can’t imagine what my life would be like without you.”

Tears welled up in her eyes and rolled down her cheeks to fall onto the back of Darren’s hand. The hot tears seemed to permeate his skin, needling his heart.

Darren looked at Nora with cold indifference, but under the mask of detachment, his heart ached as if a dagger was being repeatedly plunged into it.

‘Now, everything is finally settled. I’m a loser but this woman still wants to take something from me. What a ridiculous thing!

David has regained control of the Xu Clan. Although I’m still the second youngest master of the Xu Clan, David and even the whole of the Xu Clan have taken strict precautions against me. It will be extremely difficult for me to fight back effectively, ‘ he bitterly thought to himself. All of Darren’s ambitions seemed dashed now.

“Did you ever feel sorry for me when you slept with someone else? Did you ever care about my feelings when you groaned and moaned under another man’s body?” he asked in a voice laced with resentment.

Darren suddenly pushed Nora aside and looked down at her with disgust, as if she was trash and the mere sight of her made him sick.

Nora, who had fallen to the ground, looked up at Darren with surprise and panic etched onto her face as tears now flowed earnestly from her eyes.

‘Why does he treat me like this?

How did Darren become so cold-hearted just like David?’ she thought, overwhelmed with sadness.

Nora crawled on her hands and knees like a penitent sinner toward Darren, grasped his leg with both hands and explained tearfully, “That was not what I wanted… Darren, believe me! David forced me to do those things. I’m your wife. How could I possibly have voluntarily had a love affair with another man? It’s all because of him!”

Darren bore a deep grudge against David, so she seized the chance to lay all the blame and responsibility on David’s shoulders. He was a convenient scapegoat.

“Are you sure that David is the father of your unborn child?”

Darren grabbed her chin hard with his slender fingers and forced her to raise her head and look him in the eye, leaving red finger-shaped marks on her delicate white face.

‘What does he mean by that? Does he known everything?’ she thought in horror.

Nora trembled violently with fear. Her chin ached dully, bringing her to her senses. She dared not ask him whether he knew the truth or not. Things seemed to be different from what she had imagined. The only thing she could do was to play her part as the circumstances permitted. The game had suddenly changed and she was lost in it now.

“Darren, don’t you believe me? David really is the father of this unborn child.

You know he loves me. Even though you and I got married, he still wanted to win my heart. Two months ago, he called me one night and said that he had something important to tell me. He also said that it concerned you… I was worried about you, so I went to see him… But I didn’t expect that he would…”

As she spoke, tears streamed down her cheeks. She looked at Darren with mock sorrow as if she was a poor woman who had been wronged. It was an Oscar-winning performance, which Darren didn’t believe anymore.

Regardless of whether Darren knew the truth that David was not the father of this unborn child, she had to cast in a bone of discontent between Darren and David.

She tried to persuade Darren to believe that David had forced her to make love to him because David had never regarded Darren as his brother. The insinuation was that David had never respected his brother, even sleeping with his wife in an act of defiance.

Darren’s lips curled into a contemptuous smile. ‘This woman is such a good performer and excellent at confusing right and wrong. She is a born actress, ‘ he thought to himself.

“Oh, really?” he asked with a faint smile but his eyes were like bottomless cold brown pools.

Nora felt a sense of desperation. However, she clung to hope when she saw that Darren didn’t refute her.

‘Perhaps there’s still a chance to win his trust? Or he could be testing me to see if I’ve lied? What if he has fallen for what David told him? What can I do then?’ she thought quickly.

“Darren, you know me well. I’m not a girl who often talks out the side of her mouth.” Nora gritted her teeth firmly as she spoke.

All that remained to her now was to fight for his trust.

“Since we haven’t divorced, you are still legally my wife. I guess that you are then unwilling to divorce me. Since you are still my wife, I won’t allow you to give birth to this illegitimately-conceived child. I have arranged a procedure for you. You’ll abort the child.”

Darren pulled his hand back from Nora’s grasp and looked down at her with an indifferent expression on his face. Then, he waved his hand, and suddenly, several doctors in white coats rushed into the room.

Nora looked at the doctors in horror and instantly realized in her terrorized state that Darren had never had any intention of divorcing her; instead, he had been testing her. He was a monster!

Though she didn’t really care for the unborn child, it was still useful to her, and she didn’t want to have an abortion.

Thinking of this, she threw herself at Darren, holding onto his disabled legs with her hands as she begged, “Darren, please don’t kill this child. It has been growing in my womb for three months. If you really hate this child, I will send it to a welfare institution after it comes into this world. It’s a human life! We can’t just kill it at will.”

Although Nora didn’t really want to give birth to this child at all, she knew without a doubt that it was not in her best interests to have an abortion.

Darren waved to the doctors behind her, signalling to them to take her away. He had no intention of listening to her pleas.

“This woman who has betrayed me will certainly not produce an offspring of good quality. Since she likes this unborn child so much, as punishment, you can give her an operation to make her sterile,” he said coldly to the doctors.

Darren’s voice was eerily gentle but his stare was filled with malevolence.

The doctors hurriedly came up to Nora and grasped her hands and legs. Then, they forcefully carried her into the next room in which medical equipment had already been set up. Obviously, Darren had prepared everything for her abortion. There was a calm logic to his plan which was most disturbing.

Nora was summarily tied to the operating table. She opened her eyes wide in horror and watched a doctor approaching her with syringes in his gloved hand. Apparently, he was going to give her an injection.

“No… No! Darren! Help me! Darren, I promise that I will do anything that you want me to do! I’ll be your slave! Darren, just let me go!” she cried out in hysterical terror.

Turning his wheelchair around, Darren came over to Nora’s side. Then, he gestured to the doctors, who, upon seeing his order, immediately left the room.

Nora’s eyes were red with terror and misery, and too much crying had swollen them almost shut. At this moment, Darren had become a savior in her eyes, though ironically it was he who had sent her to the operating table only moments ago. In her mind, he held the power of life and death now.

“Darren, I know I was wrong… I am willing to have an abortion. I don’t want to keep it!” she cried weakly.

He twisted his lips into an evil smile and quietly said, “I’ve changed my mind. You can keep this unborn child, but…”

“But what?” Nora looked anxiously at Darren.

Although she didn’t love the unborn child in her womb, she also didn’t want to become infertile. In the Xu Clan, a sterile woman would not be accepted. Neither Darren nor David would then be able to stop her from being driven away.

In the upper classes, sterile women were not qualified to be anyone’s wives, especially in the Xu Clan. She would then be ostracised for sure.

His eyes gleamed with evil intentions as he looked at her speculatively.

“I want you to do me a favor,” he said.

She could sense the coldness in his eyes, and it sent a chill through her heart. Nora couldn’t help but shiver in fear, realizing that she had never known what kind of person Darren was because his real personality had always been so deviously hidden. Compared to Darren, she was just an incompetent plotter.

Darren had so easily defeated her, and now, he had driven her to the edge of utter soul-damning despair.

“Okay. I promise you that I will do whatever you want me to do! Anything!” Nora bit her pale lips and nodded without hesitation. She was at his mercy now.

“Come in,” Darren called over his shoulder at the doctors waiting outside. They quickly entered and untied Nora. Nora was very puzzled, but she dared not ask why he had suddenly changed his mind. The workings of a psychopathic mind were dark and demonic, and not easily understood by mere mortals. Nora realized that if she wanted to survive, she would have to worship Darren’s every whim.

“This child is still useful.”

An insidiously cruel smile formed on his lips and his handsome face clouded as he looked at Nora with a hard light in his eyes.
