“What can I do for you?”

Emily came straight to the point in a business-like manner. She projected an indifferent and serious air as if they had nothing else to talk about apart from business affairs.

Ray, however, seemingly didn’t hear her words, as he walked around in her office to find the most comfortable place to sit.

He made himself at home and then picked up a magazine to read with a smiling face, apparently having no intention of answering her question.

“Ray Lin, what are you doing here?” Emily became impatient, but maintained her composure long enough to ask again. However, her voice was cold and clear, resounding in the office.

Ray’s slender finger paused in its paging through the magazine upon hearing her icy tone, but less than a second later, he continued reading the magazine. His attitude was one of casual patience and he showed no intention of this being a quick business meeting. Rather, it seemed as if he and Emily were good friends hanging out.

In fact, he didn’t know what was written in the magazine as he wasn’t reading at all. He just knew that he wanted to stay here. He wanted to stay in this office where he could smell Emily’s fragrance and feel part of her existence. Emily’s scent in the room was intoxicating to him, increasing his longing for her and drawing him near her, even though he knew that there were insurmountable risks involved in that nearness.

Emily, however, was losing her patience with Ray, as he was behaving like a spoiled child and ignoring her. She couldn’t help but put down the paper in her hand, stand up, and walk up to Ray, staring hard at the sitting man.

Ray was a good-looking man, but the way in which he was now behaving made him look like an unruly schoolboy instead. Emily sighed and thought with resignation, ‘He is just a boy. I don’t want to bother myself arguing with a kid.’

After she calmed herself down with a deep breath, Emily said with a cold voice, “Ray, I’m going out to pick up my young daughter with my husband. If you have anything to say, you’d better be quick. Don’t waste my time.”

Feeling Emily’s growing annoyance, Ray put down the magazine and looked up to meet her clear and beautiful eyes. He enjoyed the sensation of sinking into their bottomless depths. It was wild and exciting, but then the forbidden had always been alluring to him.

“Why can’t we be friends anymore?”
Ray asked softly. There was a sense of grief and pleading in his tone, making it sound like he was only a benign and harmless kid asking to be invited to play with his friends.

Emily was surprised and rendered speechless by his words. ‘Is he being cute and adorable on purpose?’ she wondered painfully.

But soon, she came to her senses. She looked at Ray with steady eyes, and refused his request ruthlessly. “I’m sorry. My husband doesn’t want me to have a male friend!”

‘If Jacob knows Ray Lin came to meet me again, he might give him a really hard time.

Ray isn’t a bad man. He just doesn’t know what exactly it is that he wants. I hope he can realize what’s most important and of value to him, instead of getting distracted by such trivial matters as a crush.’

“Are you his puppet? Why do you listen to him all the time? He’s not your owner.

You won’t be friends with me because your husband told you not to. Does that mean that you will always do everything he asks you to? What if he asks you to go and die? Will you just go ahead and die for him?”

Ray wasn’t able to control his emotions this time. He was mad and frustrated by her words, and stared at Emily furiously.
Emily was dumbfounded by his reaction at first, but a few seconds later, she came to herself and a wide smile appeared on her lips. An expression of happiness glowed on her face. She put it explicitly, “Yes, if that’s what he wants, I would die for him!”

Thinking of the past when the cold and domineering Jacob had put his life at risk to save her during the earthquake, Emily’s heart melted again. She still remembered what Jacob had once whispered in her ear: “Now that you’ve drunk my blood, you’re mine!”

‘Jacob, the arbitrary, scheming man, put himself in danger for me again and again. He even lost his memory for me.

Without his memory, he became “bear” and became an ignorant kid.He really suffered a lot for me. I owe him too much, so much that I can’t ever repay him even if I tried for the rest of my life!’ Emily’s mind drifted.

Everything that had happened in the past flashed in her mind’s eye like a movie. And before she knew it, her eyes were filled with hot tears.

If someone had asked Emily what happiness was, she would certainly have given them a clear answer. ‘The time that Jacob and I have spent together, the children we have, and our determination of staying with each other for the rest of our lives. That is true happiness!’

Ray was completely shocked by the determined attitude of this woman.

Slowly, frustration and despair clouded over him. He saw then that he would never have a chance with her, and that she was out of his reach not because her husband said so, but because she chose to be with someone other than Ray Lin.

He didn’t know what had happened between Jacob and Emily before, but he could feel clearly that she loved the man much more than she would ever love herself.

Suddenly, the door creaked open.

While the two of them remained silent, Jacob opened the door, entered the room and took Emily in his arms. There was a warmth in the hug which was to be envied, but not shared with anyone other than Jacob and Emily. On the outside of this warmth, Ray could only watch.

Jacob had heard almost everything in Emily’s and Ray’s conversation. He had been informed that Ray Lin had showed up at SL Jewelry again, so he had immediately dropped all his business affairs and rushed over to Emily’s office.
He trusted Emily implicitly, but he didn’t trust anyone else who was around her, except for himself.

“Darling, I would never let you sacrifice your life for me. If that day really comes, I shall be the one who dies first!” Jacob spoke into Emily’s ear.

He put his arms firmly around her and held her tightly. His deep and low voice was both charming and resolute. He was like the ancient oak, immutable and permanent, and would always be there for Emily.

He would never let her get hurt!

Ray’s heart ached upon seeing the couple hugging each other, but what stung him even more was the deep commitment they gave to each other.

‘Maybe they’re meant to be together.

There are only two of them in their world, and there is no place for me anymore, if there had ever been place for me to begin with. Maybe I was wrong!’

“Emily, I’m coming to say goodbye today,” Ray started after a lengthy time of meditation and reflection.

The couple was surprised. Emily left Jacob’s embrace and looked at Ray with a puzzled expression on her face.

‘Goodbye? Why is he saying goodbye?

He is a popular star now and has only just come of age. There is a brilliant future for his career in the domestic market. Why is he choosing this time to say goodbye?’ Emily wondered, not certain what he was trying to imply.

But Jacob was rather satisfied with this unexpected result. He gazed at Ray with a smug smile, thinking, ‘This boy has finally become sensible now.’

“I was going to confess my feelings for you before,” Ray said with a chuckle. He looked more handsome now since he was smiling and not pouting like a spoiled child.

‘Confess his feelings?’

Jacob’s face immediately turned grey upon hearing Ray’s words. ‘What exactly does this stupid boy want?’ Jacob mentally sneered as his discontent built up again.

“But then, I suddenly realized that maybe I’m not in love with you. I’m just envious of Jacob who could have met such a great woman like you. All I want is a woman who loves me with her whole heart, just like you do for Jacob!”

Ray kept on explaining his feelings regardless of Jacob’s threatening eyes, but when he finished, Jacob was relieved and kissed Emily’s forehead to show off and celebrate.

Emily was also very happy for Ray and she looked at him quietly with a sweet smile as she thought, ‘This kid has finally become more mature and sensible.’

“I had been planning to study abroad before and what happened lately has been very tiring, so I think now’s a good time for me to take a vacation. I want to go abroad to learn more and make myself into a better man!” When Ray said those words, he felt at ease and more open-minded. He realized as he spoke that this was the right decision, not just as far as it concerned Emily and Jacob, but also for his own self.

“That’s great. To be honest, I used to take you for a young boy before, but now I see you as a man. Go on, Ray Lin. I’ll back you up!”

Emily made a victory sign as she laughed happily. She was truly happy about his sudden mature insight and decision.

“Well… May I get a hug before I go?” Ray asked with a smile as he walked to Emily.

“Of cour…”

“No, you may not!” Jacob interjected, still suspecting that the young star was being duplicitous.

Jacob instantly moved forward to stop him, spread his arms and then said to Ray with a stern look, “If you really want to hug someone, you can hug me instead!”
