“I’m sorry. Just when I was about to win, David went to ask for our father’s help. I had no other choice but to give up.

During those days, I was grounded at home by my father. As soon as I got the chance, I came here for you,”

Darren said in a gentle voice as he drew Dina back into his arms. However, his black eyes were full of ice. His words may have sounded simple and plausible, but as always, Darren hid a wealth of darker intentions beneath his silver-tongued platitudes.

Now, Darren was facing extreme pressure from people like Jacob and David. With only Ariel’s and Nora’s assistance, Darren had no other choice but to approach Dina to help him. What was more, Ariel was only helping him because she was cheated by his lies, and Nora was simply afraid of him. Darren’s list of allies was short indeed.

Therefore, even though Dina filled Darren with disgust, he had to hide his feelings and bear her presence, even going so far as to reveal the truth about his legs to gain her trust. Fortunately, Dina was in dire straits herself and eager to believe any story as long as it lifted her out of the despairing world of prostitution.

‘Once before, I had given up being the heir of the Xu Family because of love. I gave up my legs because of that love.

However, I got nothing back in the end. My sacrifice and tolerance was exchanged for nothing. I’m no longer the man I was before. Now, everything I had to give up, I swear I shall get it back, one by one!

It doesn’t matter whether David is in charge of the Xu Consortium now, whether Nora is pursuing her love for David, and even the whole of Jingshi City, I swear to get them back! I will finally be the king of Jingshi City!

“Dina, you know that I have always liked you. My marriage to Nora is nothing but a piece of paper. She has left me for David and even told him everything she knew. Now, I’m in a very dangerous place. I have too many enemies, so I cannot do many of the things that I want.” Darren continued to spin his tale.
Ariel’s eyebrows furrowed deeply as she knew that Darren and Nora had reached an agreement and that Nora had never betrayed him. She began to see his devious nature and his ease of telling lies.

With what she knew, Ariel felt without a doubt that Darren was lying to Dina. In her desperation, Dina was lapping these lies up, as if they were sweet candies! ‘If he can so easily lie to Dina, could he have lied to me about Rita as well?’ Ariel realized then.

Ariel’s resolve concerning Rita began to waver as she thought of all the evidence that Darren had shown her before, and then she thought of Rita’s gentle face which she remembered from her childhood. Something was not adding up!

‘Who on earth is lying, and why?’ Ariel was deeply puzzled.

Darren looked affectionately at Dina, enchanting her with his implied promises. Although she had planned to feign refusal, she instead gave up on that plan as she stared at his handsome face.

“Dina, I need you! Our future needs you, too!” Darren said with a firm, convincing tone.

‘Our future… Our future…’ Dina repeated it again and again in her mind. She felt her own excitement building.

Mistreated by everyone and now struggling at the bottom of society, Dina felt, all of a sudden, that her heart had finally settled into contentment at this moment.

Darren was like a beacon, bobbing on the ocean, ready to offer safety to the helplessly drowning Dina. He would warm her and lead her to the safety of dry land.

“Darren… I will do anything you want me to do to help you!” she answered with conviction. Dina left Darren’s arms and looked up at him affectionately. She said in a gentle voice, “But you need to promise me one thing, dear. After we succeed, you will give Emily and Rita to me and let me punish those two bitches!”

Dina knew that it was now impossible for her to be with Ray. However, Emily had always been the one that she hated most. She would never let Emily off the hook so easily!

When Dina had lost all of her power in the entertainment circles, she had decided to attribute all of her failures to Emily and Rita, though it was Jacob and David who had pushed her to this point.

Dina would have to rely on Darren if she wanted to have her revenge on them! Therefore, Dina and Darren were just taking what they wanted from each other. However, Dina wanted not only money, revenge and social status, but also Darren’s handsome appearance and his noble family heritage. She craved to be lifted from the pit of despair where she now languished, and Darren had become her savior.

“Okay, whatever you want. I will promise you anything!” Darren reached out to softly stroke Dina’s hair as he spoke in a gentle voice.

“Thank you…” Dina beamed at him and her face took on a shy, almost girlish smile. Darren nodded and also smiled.

Dina was so happy that she grasped Darren by his neck with her hands and swiftly pulled him to her breast, while her red lips moved to his handsome face.

However, Ariel’s mind began to waver even more and she had no desire to listen to them further. While the two were distracted by each other in the room below, Ariel swiftly made her escape.

In David’s house.

It was already midnight. Ariel returned unnoticed to her own room. The whole villa was tranquil as everyone slept peacefully, but Ariel’s mind was in a mess. She lay in her bed for a long time but could not sleep. The events of this evening replayed in her mind, haunting her as she tried to decide on which course of action she should take.

“Help! Help!

Someone come help me, please!”

a sudden, panicked voice disturbed the night’s peace with a shrill cry, and Ariel sat up in her bed at the disturbing sound. Quickly, she went in search of the voice that had cried out.

In Rita’s room, Nora was lying on the ground, covered in blood, while Rita stared at her in panic.

The scream had come from Rita. Ariel was startled for one second, then she ran to Rita’s side without further thought and asked anxiously, “What’s wrong? What happened?”

Then, all of the other maids also arrived at the room. They tried to help Nora up but Nora stopped them and looked at Rita with tears in her eyes. “Why? Do you really hate me so much?” she asked in a low voice, but it was loud enough to be heard by everyone present.

Faced with accusing stares, Rita felt that she was being pushed to the edge of a cliff.

She shook her head, and her face was pale as she responded in a quivering voice, “I do not know. When I opened my eyes, I saw Nora standing in front of me holding a knife. So, I… I was so scared that I pushed her away, and then she fell down…”

The scarlet blood was an extremely striking contrast against Nora’s pale skin. But Rita believed that if she had not woken up, then it would have been her and her baby lying in a pool of blood.

Confusion showed on the faces of the gathered servants as they all tried to decide who the guilty party was.

Ariel caught Rita’s hand tightly and then looked at Nora, who was still lying on the ground, with cold eyes. She saw that Nora was in much pain, but deep in her eyes, there was a glimmer of cruel malice and complacency.

With one glimpse, Ariel understood what had happened.

“No… I did not carry a knife. I was thirsty, so I came out to get some water. Then, I heard some crying from her room, so I went in. Rita seemed to be caught in a nightmare, so I tried to wake her up… But she pushed me away instead…” Nora explained calmly, her face a perfect mask to her performance.

“Wail!” Nora cried again, a heart-rending sound which echoed in the big master bedroom and disturbed the tranquil night.

“Look at this room. There is no knife here at all!” Nora added.

Nora’s voice became even more distraught. Everyone present began to search for the knife upon hearing what Nora had said. However, after searching every corner in the room, they failed to find the knife. The weapon seemed to have disappeared!

“Ma’am, maybe you made a mistake…” said Stuart. He disliked Nora very much, but with everyone present, Stuart had no way to support Rita’s innocence as no one had found the knife.

“I did not!” Rita became irritated and glared at Stuart angrily. “I saw clearly that she was holding a knife! And I was not having a nightmare, either!” she yelled desperately.

She did not understand why they could not find the knife, but Rita was certain that she had not been having a nightmare. She had been looking at her sister’s picture before falling asleep, so she had been having a pleasant dream! At least, until she’d woken up with Nora next to her bed.

“Rita, I know that you hate me. I know you do not want me to stay here… But you should not have wronged me like this, at least…

I…”

Nora’s tears tumbled like glossy beads from a torn string and, even before finishing her words, she fainted and fell to the ground. However, she had succeeded in creating an image in the minds of all present that Rita was an evil person. Her carefully chosen words had doomed Rita to become the villain in the eyes of the house servants.
