Serenity walked into the office, after which Connor gently closed the door behind her.

He decided to bring Serenity here not just because of what she had told him, of course, but because he knew how much his own boss cared about this woman. Perhaps he only wanted her to coax him a little. Besides, Serenity looked very visibly troubled just now, so it might give Jackson a great chance to swoop in and save her.

The thought of this somehow brightened Connor’s mood.

Afterward, when he returned to his office, his colleague came over to him and asked, “Who was that woman who went into the CEO’s office with you just now, Mr. Gunn?”

The employee was especially curious because judging by the way the woman dressed, there was no way that she was the kind of person who usually went in and out of Mr. Valor’s office at all.

Nevertheless, the only reply from Connor was, “That’s none of your business. If you needed to know about it, you would’ve known it already.”

All along, gossiping about Jackson Valor had always been an unpardonable crime in their organization.

Meanwhile, inside the office, Serenity stood restlessly as she watched Jackson reviewing some documents at his desk, almost choked by the tense air of awkwardness. Back then, she had firmly refused to stay by his side no matter what, and she was certain that from then on, they would have a clean break and not have anything to do with each other again.

Yet, she never expected that the day she had to swallow her own pride and come crawling back to him would come so soon. It had only been a few days, and she was already standing here before him.

Still, the man in the room was nothing like the man she knew. This man was sitting in a spacious office, clad in a smart gray suit with his hair combed back neatly, revealing his full forehead. His long eyebrows, were distinct, and his striking eyes were looking down, focused on the documents in his hands.

Around his beautiful neck was his shirt collar and a navy blue tie. His long fingers were wrapped around a black fountain pen, and as he held the pen and signed his name on the documents, his movements gave off a distinctly elegant vibe.

It remained quiet in the office for a long while until at last, his voice broke the silence.

“Did you come here just to stare at me, Sis?”

Serenity froze. She never thought that he would still call her “Sis‘ after all this time. Still, this nickname was nothing more than a mockery and a cruel joke to her as it reminded her of how naive and stupid she had been. Back then, not only did she bring him back to her place, but she had even treated him like a little brother.

“I’ve got something to ask of you,” she said, licking her dry lips.

“Okay,” He responded, but his eyes were still fixed on the documents, “Tell me, then.”

She hesitated for a while before saying, “Well, the thing is, I want my relatives to be released. They’ve been locked up long enough. I’m sure they’ve learned their lessons. I’m going to the police station to withdraw the case, but the case has always been handled by the prosecutor and your lawyers, so… I’d like you to inform your lawyers about it.”

Only then did Jackson slowly look up. His gaze fell on her face as he said, “I think I’ve already given you a

choice about what to do with the case, and you told me yourself that you didn’t want to let them go. What happened? Why did you suddenly change your mind?”

There seemed to be mockery in his eyes. She could not help but find it difficult to breathe whenever he looked at her.

After a while, she finally replied, “Umm, I just… I just want them to be released.”

Jackson reacted as if he had just heard a funny joke, and he responded, “Who do you think I am? Am I your lackey who’s just going to do whatever you order me to do? I gave you a choice, and you’ve made your choice. Now, what you must do is accept the consequences of that choice.”
