- MY UNKNOWN HUSBAND
- Season 3 Episode 16 - (She doesn't want to stay with you)
An hour later, Richard handed over a pen and conveyed what the driver said.
“According to the driver’s description, the person who gave him the pen is Mrs. Lu. She met a man on Lanting Road; I specifically showed Albert’s photo to the driver, and he confirmed that he was indeed the man in question.”
John hastily pulled his tie loose. His white fingers were pale and cold, and his dark eyes were filled with an even chillier edge.
“So we’re certain that she went to see Albert.”
Seeing the anger on John’s face, Richard tried to comfort him. “Mr. Shi, Mrs. Lu didn’t get any useful information. Since she has left…”
“Is that what I care about?” John’s head swung to face him, and Richard was caught in the other man’s angry glare.
Even if his little girl did send some information to Albert, Albert still wouldn’t win against him.
Back when he was becoming successful businessman, Albert was still just a kid who knew nothing.
For a moment Richard thought as though he was standing right in between two realms, one of fire and the other of ice.
John was giving off a cold energy that gave everyone chills, but at the same time, a furious flame blazed in his eyes. “Mr. Shi, what is it that is concerning you?”
“What the hell are you even asking me for? Go and tell that bastard to give Nina back!” John barked.
Richard stood speechless, gaping like a fish out of water.
‘So Mr. Shi cares about Mrs. Lu? So much that he isn’t fazed by the fact that she betrayed him?
If this goes on, then Mr. Shi most definitely intends to get back with her.’
Richard was getting more and more confused about John’s way of doing things.
Nevertheless, he did as he was told and called Albert. “Mr. Song, Mr. Shi wants to see you.”
Albert wasn’t expecting John to discover the situation so soon. He frowned as he looked down at Nina, who was slumbering on the bed. After careful consideration, he smiled and gave his reply. “Okay.”
They made an agreement to meet up in a conference room at Kanner Hospital, and Albert promptly showed up as promised.
Two men were waiting for him, one of them with a noble and dominant bearing, not unlike an emperor atop his throne. And beside him stood Richard.
The moment he stepped into the room, Albert felt chills prick at his body. It was like stepping into an ice cellar, when in fact it was only John’s eyes that were throwing ice daggers at him.
“Mr. Shi, why did you ask for me at such an hour?” With a polite smile on his face, Albert pulled a chair and sat down.
He wasn’t sure yet if John knew that he had imprisoned Nina, so he had to act innocent and clueless lest he give himself away.
John, on the other hand, was blunt.
“Nina.”
“Nina?” Albert continued to pretend not to know. “Mr. Shi, you seem to be looking for your wife. Why did you call me here, then? I don’t see how I have anything—”
“Where is she?” John didn’t want to waste time and energy listening to this man’s nonsense.
Despite being cut off, Albert’s temper remained steady. He even smiled when he next spoke. “I have no idea where she is. Why would you even think that I would?”
John cocked his head to the side and sneered. “Nina is your spy. Are you saying you also do not know that?”
Albert was stunned at what he heard, but a gleam of cunning quickly flashed through his eyes. The surprise lingered in his heart, albeit coupled with a healthy dose off schadenfreude.
There seemed to be a misunderstanding between John and Nina.
He did place spies around John, but his young wife was not one of them.
Nina was wild and clever, but she lacked the skills to act and appear sophisticated. In fact, her identity was shrouded in mystery and practically untraceable. To think that she had managed to survive alone in Lexingport City. She was an independent young woman who showed no signs of weakness. How could Albert ever hope to control her?
He would never enlist a spy who wasn’t completely under his thumb.
Albert didn’t expect that the remarkable John could be so blind and narrow-minded sometimes.
In the midst of his scathing thoughts, Albert remembered that Kristina had once wanted Nina to be Noah’s wife. In order to make up for all he had done to his Kristina, he came up with an idea.
He decided to stir up some more trouble, and alienate John and Nina in the process. Then Noah would have a chance.

“Mr. Shi, I must say, you really have excellent resources. You even managed to discover the identity of the person who has been sleeping next to you all this time.” Albert laughed heartily and even clapped his hands in mirth.

The sound irritated John, and his eyes narrowed as he spat the words through gritted teeth. “Hand her over.”
Albert gave another low chuckle. “Tell me, Mr. Shi, if I give Nina back, are you going to cut her into pieces? She is very capable, you know. Even if her identity is now exposed, I will still think highly of her.”
“Hand her over,” John repeated coldly. His sharp glare was starting to make Albert uncomfortable. It made him feel like a prey out in the plains, being stared down by its natural hunter. A faint hint of fear danced along his veins.
But Albert had never done anything pointless; every goal he set his heart to, he always saw through to the end.
And in this case, he was aiming to worsen the misunderstanding between the Shi couple. He stopped smiling and looked John dead in the eye.
“Mr. Shi, even though I trained her, Nina is a person with thoughts of her own. I didn’t go looking for her; she was the one who sought me out tonight and told me that she didn’t want to stay with you.”
Then he slowly leaned back on the chair and struck a casual pose. “So it isn’t exactly that I don’t want to hand her over. It’s just that Nina doesn’t want to be with you.”
A scowl descended upon John’s face like heavy dark clouds foreboding a storm. His fingers on the table twitched, as though about to curl into fists before catching themselves. And a cold ice black settled over his heart.
His little girl didn’t want to stay with him.
But would he let her go if she didn’t want to be with him?
They were a couple in the eyes of the law.
Finally, John looked up. “She is still my wife. As such, she still bears the responsibility to fulfill her wifely duties to me. If I don’t see her by noon tomorrow, I will be settling accounts with you.”
John stood and buttoned up his suit jacket, then turned and left the room without another word.
He was never the type to give any room or chance for his opponents to insert an argument with him.
“Goodbye, Mr. Shi,” Albert SAID with a smile as he watched the other man’s retreating back.
Even if John threatened him, he didn’t care.
Because he knew that he had accomplished what he had meant to do. He was sure that something miserable was starting to brew in John’s heart.
He was man of pride, after all. What was a proud man to do when he learned that the woman he fancied was averse to his affections?
Albert felt pretty happy with himself, and it showed in his wide grin.
John moved like a bow strung too tight. He needed the tension. He was afraid that if he relaxed and let go, Albert’s words would break through his defenses and make a permanent mark on his heart.
It wasn’t that Albert didn’t want to hand Nina over, but that his little girl was unwilling to stay with him.
John felt the impact of those words like a physical blow, heavy and oppressive.
He looked out of the window silently at the night. The night wind blew his ears, blowing his hair into the air ups and downs just as his heart.
John’s deep eyes were always keen and sharp, and he had meandered through life able to see through people. But it appeared that he had been unable to see through Nina’s heart.
The man who had always been expressionless and indifferent was now pale and anxious.
He was at an utter loss.
He sat on the balcony until late into the night, mulling things over and getting nowhere. Midnight came, and John was still there, the faint howling of the wind his only companion. Many cigarette butts lay scattered on the floor. He had smoked heaps of them.
The cigarette butt that was not extinguished was still between his fingers.
A single spark could start a prairie fire The spark ignited John’s reason and gradually burned it to ashes.
It was said that solace could calm a person and enable them to gain rational thought and enlightenment. But it could not be said for everyone. Some people, when left alone with their thoughts, lose their minds.
John threw the cigarette he was still smoking to the floor, and watched as its embers slowly died.
‘You don’t want to stay with me. Is it because you don’t like me?’
