MY UNKNOWN HUSBAND - Season 2 Episode 99
When Nina couldn’t get through to John again, she felt as if her heart dropped to the ground as an inexplicable sense of loss surged inside her.
Suddenly, her chest tightened.
“Mrs. Shi, what’s wrong?” Only then did Helen notice that Nina looked a little emaciated. She quickly extended her hand and placed a palm over Nina’s forehead. Fortunately, her temperature seemed normal to which she heaved a sigh of relief.
Nina forced a smile and said, “Helen, I’m fine. I guess he’s just a little busy.”
If she were being honest, she only said that last sentence as a way to comfort herself.
Lamentably, the warm sunshine outside could not distract her from the dark clouds that enveloped her.
She couldn’t understand what had happened. Why would John ignore her and come up with an excuse to not see her?
Things seemed to have changed last night. Ever since Kristina died, John had been indifferent to her.
Last night was a blur. She didn’t know how to deal with it and she couldn’t stop thinking about it either.
What should she do?
A wave of mixed emotions arose in her chest. When she ate her lunch, she would just stare blankly into nowhere. Utterly disoriented, she decided she was going to turn to her professor for help.
She called up Professor Gu and narrated to him what had happened. She purposely omitted Kristina’s name. “Professor Gu, my mind’s such a mess right now. I keep trying to calm myself down but I can’t.”
Professor Gu responded, “Don’t try to control your emotions. The more you control your emotions, the more they will trap you. In the end, you have to give your emotions free rein. You have to learn to coexist with them. Do you still remember Ellis’s ABC Theory of Emotions? What affects our emotions is not the event itself but our perception of the event.”
“Thank you, Professor Gu. I see.” Nina was still upset.
After the call, she took a cold shower and settled herself in the bed with her eyes closed. The events of last night flashed through her mind.
She was unable to fall asleep until she was able to sort out her thoughts. About two hours later, her alarm clock began ringing. She opened her eyes, a sharp look on her face.
Before anything, she needed to find John.
Then she would head to No. 4 West Forest Street. Surely, there would be new findings by now.
Shaken by Kristina’s sudden death, both Noah and Nina had been numb from the shock this morning and couldn’t bring themselves to calm down and make a sound judgment. It wouldn’t be far-fetched if they missed something the first time around.
‘If you don’t want people to know it, the best way is not to do it. When one has committed a crime, there has to be clues left.’
Nina couldn’t deny that inwardly, she was biased towards John.
Despite this, she knew that rationality had to prevail more than anything. She knew that John was smart. Whatever it was that he wanted to do, he wouldn’t be so stupid as to do it himself lest he get into trouble.
She opened her WeChat and sent a voice message to John, sounding misleadingly calm. “John. I have something important to ask you. Wait for me in the office.”
She knew he would hear the message. She was right—John heard it. Every now and then, he would play the message just to listen to it again.
“John, what time are you coming home tonight? I’m so sleepy.”
This was the voice message that she had sent last night around one or two in the morning.
He had lost count how many times he had replayed the message.
From last night until now, he had probably played back the message countless times.
Nina’s sleepy voice was soft. She almost sounded like she was purring. He couldn’t help but feel sorry for her.
Every time he listened to the voice message, he would chew on his bottom lip as a hint of tenderness flickered in his eyes. However, when he thought that Nina could possibly be Albert’s accomplice, his eyes would instantly turn cold.
The previous night, he looked into Nina and Albert’s relationship. Apparently, Albert was the first person she met in L University. Initially, they only greeted each other whenever they bumped into each other. After a while, they would share a meal or two here and there. This was when the rumors started. It took quite a while before it died down. By then, they were already such good friends.
Friendship didn’t need to be flashy for it to be genuine.
As he began to discover more clues, he was led to suspect that Nina was a spy that Albert had planted.

Last night, he caused the Song Group to lose a billion dollars. Albert probably had his hands full now.
As it happened, Nina messaged him telling him that she wanted to see him. ‘Could it just be a mere coincidence? Or is Albert nervous?’
John placed his phone down as he tried to smooth out his wrinkled eyebrows. His head ached as he tried to wrap his head around the matter.
Was it possible that the person he loved and trusted the most had been deceiving him all this time?
“Richard, please send someone to follow Nina secretly.”
“Yes, Mr. Shi.” Richard was in John’s office, standing a few meters away from him. As John’s bodyguard, it was his duty to be by his side at all times.
Richard then contacted Lena.
As soon as Nina left the North Yard, Lena trailed behind her.
Richard trained Amy and Lena himself—they were the best guards of the Shi family. They were in the top three rank in comprehensive fighting ability. While their anti-reconnaissance ability was not top level, they were still nonetheless outstanding.
Initially, Lena tried to keep some distance between her and Nina.
Eventually, she began to monitor her closely. Her car was less than four meters away from Nina’s. Fortunately, Nina didn’t seem to notice anything.
Nina drove all the way to Time Group. This wasn’t her first time coming to the CEO’s office.
Henry wasn’t there that day as John sent him to help Adrian.
John’s assistant was buried in work. When she heard the footsteps, she stood up to greet whoever was arriving. “Mrs. Shi? Are you here for Mr. Shi?”
“Is he in the office?” Nina approached the assistant. She unintentionally noticed a photo in her drawer. It seemed a little frayed but she could clearly make out the word “Orphanage” written on it.
She was stunned—she had no idea that the assistant was an orphan.
The assistant looked so smart and well-balanced. She must have been lucky enough to have met someone who helped her and set her on the right path.
Putting this thought aside, Nina focused on her original purpose coming here today.
Before the assistant could say anything, Nina knocked on the door and promptly went inside.
At that moment, John was sitting behind his desk, seemingly busy with work. Documents were piled next to him, left and right.
He had his eyebrows knitted together.
Had he been working here this entire time?
Did he spend the entire night here?
Nina figured this was a plausible reason for his not coming home last night.
It didn’t matter if she believed John or not—what she needed was proof of his innocence.
“John, have you had lunch yet?” She was worried that he had forgotten to eat amidst all the work he had to do.
In the past month, John had been going back to the North Yard just to have lunch and dinner with her every day.
This was the first day that he didn’t have lunch with her.
When John heard the door open, he knew it was her just from hearing the footsteps alone. However, he pretended not to hear her.
When she asked him if he had lunch yet, his hand holding the pen twitched as the expression on his face shifted.
She didn’t ask him anything else—instead, she was more concerned about him than anything.
Perhaps Nina was an excellent spy who knew how to manipulate his emotions.
