James did not dare to stay any longer and slipped away without looking back. Nina could not help chuckling when she saw James fleeing. “Was I too unkind?” John stepped forward, slightly bent down, and whispered in her ear, “As long as it’s a man, you have to keep a distance of half a meter. Do you understand?”

The sudden gesture startled Nina, but she turned her head on instinct. John’s warm breath made her earlobe turn red.
As she turned, her lips brushed over John’s chin.

“What are you doing whispering in my ear like that? You scared me.”

With heat blossoming on her face, Nina took half a step back. Before she could move away any further, John grabbed her wrist and dragged her to his office.

John’s palm was warm. Nina was able to catch a whiff of tobacco mixed with mint when she was close enough to him to share breath. Either he smoked a mint-flavored cigarette or he popped a mint after smoking. Either way, the smell made her senses tingle.

She even found the scent a little bit attractive on John.

At the office, the female assistant came in with a cup of coffee and handed it to Nina. “Here you go, Mrs. Shi.”

Nina took the cup and stared at the assistant. She then told John casually, “You have two assistants now, a male assistant and a female assistant.”

They were just casual words, but to the ears of the other three people in the room, they were unusual.

The assistant simply smiled and explained, “Oh, no, Mrs. Shi. You misunderstand. I’m Henry’s assistant.”

“Yes. Mr. Shi only has a male assistant,” Henry added. Nina turned to look at John and caught him flashing her a knowing smile.

She quickly turned her attention to her cup of coffee when John’s stare started piercing her cool front. He must be thinking that she was a little jealous. When John was about to tease her, Nina spoke up.

“What are you smiling about? Actually, it’s good for you to have a female assistant.”

John’s smile slowly receded at Nina’s words. So he misunderstood her? She was not jealous?

The atmosphere in the office turned awkward.

Henry then decided to break the silence. “We’re off duty now. We’re leaving.” He turned around and left with his assistant on his heels.

Sipping her coffee, Nina remembered that she had something important to do, so she stood up and grabbed John’s hand. “I need to go buy some clothes.”

John pulled on Nina’s soft hand, forcing her to face him. “You have a lot of clothes at home. You don’t need to buy more,” he said sternly.

“They’re your clothes.”

“What’s mine is yours.”

Nina stopped and looked at John intently. Her eyes were a little difficult to read, but there was a shadow of a smile on her lips.

On the other hand, John was complacent. It seemed that Adrian’s speech was quite effective.

The little girl must have fallen for him.

“Have you read some kind of novel like a girl falling in love with a bossy CEO?” Nina asked. “Don’t use other men’s tricks on me. They’re useless. You should focus on your work. If you go bankrupt, I will have to support you.”

Once again, the smile on John’s face disappeared. Nina really knew how to push his buttons. Still holding her hand, he stood up and exited his office. “Fine. Buy your clothes,” he said.

“Good. I’m going to buy some dresses and a few everyday clothes. I have to go to meet your family tonight. Don’t you think it’s too soon for me to see your family?” Nina successfully changed the subject.

John’s face darkened at the mention of his family.

“We’re married, so my home is your home. You’re long overdue to meet my family formally, you know,” he replied. With an innocent look on her face, Nina said, “I know, but we are just in a romantic relationship now.”

The elevator doors opened and Nina and John got in. Pushing the ground floor button, John said through gritted teeth, “We already talked about this, Nina.

You’re my wife. You are to fulfill your wifely responsibilities and obligations.”

“I know, I know, but us being married is a show for others to see. I’m talking about the real relationship between us. We’re…”

Nina was not able to continue as John silenced her with his mouth.

If he had not stopped her, he would have been pissed off to death by the next things that escaped her lips.

“Hey, what are you doing? We’re in the elevator.” Nina struggled out of John’s strong grip.

John let go and looked Nina straight in the eye. “Boyfriend and girlfriend or a married couple?” he asked through gritted teeth.

“Boyfriend and girlfriend,” Nina answered without second guessing herself. “You promised me that you would give me one month.”

John kissed her again. Seeing that the elevator had reached the third floor, Nina could only make a concession. “Okay, fine. I agree. I’ll tell everyone that we’re a married couple.”

“That’s more like it.” John was a little satisfied and finally left Nina alone. Nina murmured, “But we’re really just boyfriend and girlfriend.”

“What?” With a questioning look, John stepped toward Nina, forcing her to a corner of the elevator.

He regretted agreeing to the rules. He should have set a shorter time, a week instead of a month.

“All right, all right,” Nina said, panicking a little. “We are a married couple, okay?” Nina found that she was more and more afraid of John now. Whenever he approached, her legs trembled.

It was exhausting.

“Okay. That’s more like it.”

John slowly stepped away until he and Nina were standing shoulder to shoulder. The elevator eventually reached the ground floor. As soon as its doors opened, John and Nina walked out side by side like nothing happened.

Nina was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief, but she was still a little angry. She wanted to retreat a step and calm herself for a while, but there was no time.

The more she tolerated John, the angrier she became.

He lied and did not keep his word.

John took Nina to FG clothing store. Lisa was there to receive them graciously.

“Mrs. Shi, what kind of party are you attending tonight? I will dress you up according to the occasion.”

“I’m going to meet John’s family. I’ll go to Stone Road for dinner. It’s just a regular dinner. Casual wear will do,” Nina answered.

“Got it, Mrs. Shi. This way, please. Mr. Shi, I’ll take care of her. Please wait here.” Lisa personally selected the clothes and took Nina to the fitting room.

A few minutes passed, but Nina was still nowhere to be seen.

Since the last time that something had happened to Nina, John had been quick to worry for her safety whenever she left his sight.

He went to the fitting room that Nina entered and knocked on the door.

“Nina? Are you okay? Why haven’t you come out?” John asked worriedly.

“I’m in a little trouble,” Nina answered and looked at the dark red stain on her trousers.

She was on her period.

She counted the days in her head. Her period was right on time. No wonder she felt a little sore in her waist when she took a cab today.

It was not John’s torture that made her feel pained after all.

Nina was about to ask Lisa to come in and help her, but when John heard her fitting room door open, he hurriedly walked in and shut the door behind him.
A little scream escaped Nina’s throat. “What are you doing here, John? You’re not supposed to be in here,” she complained. Nina was still trying on some clothes, and she was in her underwear when John came in. She frantically gathered up her clothes and desperately tried to cover up.

“What’s wrong?” John asked, completely ignoring Nina’s questions.

Seeing that he was so concerned, Nina beamed. Her bright smile reflected in John’s eyes.

“I’m fine. It’s just…” Nina was too embarrassed to speak out.

“What is it? Tell me.” John was almost panicking. Did Nina hurt herself in any way?

Looking at John’s anxious face, Nina smiled and said, “I just got my period, which means I’m not pregnant.”
