- MY UNKNOWN HUSBAND, VOLUME 2
- Season 4 Episode 3 - (Thinking about another man)
After taking a photo of John and Nina, Emma quickly moved the camera down and aimed it at James.
John’s hand was clasping tightly around the back of his neck and holding him down. Looking like a duck that was about to be chopped on the block, James flailed around helplessly.
Emma snickered and pressed the shutter.
She took a very memorable photo.
“Damn it! Why did you take it? I wasn’t ready!” Hearing the camera click, James immediately raised his head.
John smirked and let go of him. James then ran to grab the camera from Emma who hid it behind her back and away from his grasp.
“I just want to have a look at my photo,” James whined. “You can’t force me into doing anything I don’t want to do,” Emma replied, shaking her head.
James was speechless. ‘I wasn’t forcing her.’
Looking at Emma, he withdrew his hand and reminded her, “You can’t let another soul see that photo, okay?”
“Okay.” Emma nodded and went to take photos of everyone else.
In the end, everyone had a group photo taken.
It looked like a family photo, and it was beautiful.
It was already late when Nina’s birthday party finally came to a close.
Everyone stayed in North Yard for the night.
They were all given rooms where they could spend the night, but they were far from the main villa where John and Nina lived.
James and Chester shared a room. Daniel and his wife also got a room of their own as well as Michelle and Emma. The two ladies had not seen each other for a long time and had a lot of catching up to do.
Everyone had gone to their respective rooms for the night. After making sure that everyone was good, John and Nina went to their villa hand in hand.
On their way, they saw fireflies again, lingering around them.
“Who’s controlling the fireflies?” Nina turned around in confusion and did not see anyone else.
John pointed at the rooftop of the main villa and said, “Richard and the others. They’re up there right now.”
“Shouldn’t they be in the hospital?” Nina lowered her gaze, feeling a little guilty. She knew it was her who injured them.
“They’re okay now. They’ve recovered.” John snapped his fingers, and the lights gradually winked out.
“Sorry, there are no stars tonight.” He looked up at the sky. “I wanted to hold a grand birthday party for you, but I was sure that I could never make it greater than the ones you’d had in C Island. So I came up with other ideas.”
“You asked my brother, didn’t you?” Nina stopped and stood in front of her husband. She looked up at him.
John then grabbed her and lifted her onto his back. She giggled and put her arms around his neck.
“I did. He said that every year on your birthday, you went to the forest to look for the elk and to watch the stars and the fireflies.” John looked up at the sky and saw only a few stars. “Unfortunately, only a few stars decided to come out and shine tonight.”
“There are stars over there, there, and there.” Nina pointed at the few stars in the sky and smiled happily.
He held her even tighter, fearing that she would fall.
“Still too few,” John said. Lexingport City was different from C Island. C Island was prosperous, but the pace of life was very slow, like a resort.
In a city like Lexingport City, people were busy day and night. Even with the sun down and resting, there were endless lights from cars and city lamps. The city itself outshone the night sky. It humbled the stars.
“It doesn’t matter. Tonight, I saw fireflies, the forest, the elk, and most importantly, all of you, the people who matter to me. That’s enough.” She wrapped her arms around his neck tighter and kissed him on the cheek.
Then, he patted her on the waist and smiled.
A lot of things had happened recently, so John was not able to focus entirely on preparing Nina’s birthday party. In haste, he had put up a fake forest and made mechanical fireflies. He had also worn elk costume to complete the surprise.
However, he could not make a night sky full of stars.
He had made up his mind to create a starry sky next year, one that only belonged to her.
He would also get her a real forest with real fireflies and a real elk. He would plant a huge banyan tree in that forest to make it look even more magical.
Completely unaware that John was already planning her next birthday, Nina leaned her head on his shoulder and muttered, “I wish Noah had made it, though.”
Nina regarded Noah as her brother, someone she looked up to.
The thoughts in John’s mind instantly drifted away, and he paused at the mention of Noah’s name.
‘She’s thinking about another man again,’ he thought.

“He’s busy.” But John was lying.
He did not invite Noah on purpose.
“Did you invite him?” Nina asked briskly, her eyes shining.
John did not respond.
He did not want to tell his wife another lie.
Nina thought that her husband’s silence meant yes, so she happily kissed him on the face and said, “Thank you, honey.
Noah is also very important to me.”
“But he didn’t show up.” John seemed to be angry, and he quickened his pace.
“I understand. He must be crazy busy. I know his job is very demanding.” Nina understood Noah very much.
On the other hand, John did not understand at all why Noah meant so much to his wife. He wanted to bring it up but decided against it. He could not ruin the moment right now. Otherwise, everything would be a waste.
As the old saying went, “Harm set, harm get.” It was true when it came to a couple like them.
‘If I hurt my wife even a little right now, it’ll backfire on me tenfold,’ John thought.
“Yes, it is. Anyway, it’s time to go to bed.” John quickly changed the subject and walked to the front door of the main villa.
At this time, they saw Richard and the others who had just come down from the rooftop.
They greeted John and Nina with a loud and clear voice. They spoke like they were not recently injured.
Nina smiled and said, “Thank you for the fireflies.”
“It’s our pleasure, Mrs. Shi. Happy birthday,” Richard and the others said.
“Thank you.” Nina felt it was impolite to not face Richard and the others properly, so she patted John on the shoulder, signaling to him to let her down.
As soon as she was down, she clearly saw the bruises on Richard’s face and the splints on Amy’s arm and Lena’s leg.
She felt a horrible pang of guilt.
She could only stare at them with wide eyes.
‘John says that they have recovered, but it doesn’t seem like that,’ she thought.
Nina looked up at John. He immediately understood and said calmly, “Well, they didn’t die. They’ll be fine.”
Nina was speechless. She could only imagine how more difficult their jobs must be.
She swept her gaze through them. “Are you all right, Richard, Amy, and Lena?” With an apologetic face, Nina was about to step forward to comfort them.
The three were so frightened that they shook their heads in fear. “We’re fine, Mrs. Shi.”
They recoiled at the sight of Nina’s outstretched hand. She was not intoxicated, but they were still afraid. Nina slowly withdrew her hand.
She had not expected that she had built such a notoriety in North Yard.
“We’ll leave you to turn in for the night.” Richard was relatively calm, but his voice still trembled a little.
Nina had beaten him twice already, and he was hurt severely in both occasions. He had gotten two of his ribs broken, and his chin was nearly dislocated.
Even trying to talk was an assault to the senses.
“Okay. Good night,” John nodded. Richard, Amy, and Lena left at once as if they had just talked themselves out of an inquisition.
Watching them walk away, Nina sighed, “What are they so afraid of? And why didn’t they defend themselves against me? I’m sure they could’ve beaten me.”
Hearing this, they were shocked and almost slipped.
They could definitely beat her, but they did not dare.
Hurting John’s wife even in self-defense meant that their lives were forfeit.
John would introduce them to a whole new world of hurt and make them feel every painful second of it.
None of them wanted that.
“They can’t defeat you.” With a smile, John held Nina in his arms again and patted her on the waist. “Why didn’t you beat Chester when you were drunk last time?”
