MY UNKNOWN HUSBAND, VOLUME 2 - Season 3 Episode 77
At Elena Lake
The evening breeze was gently blowing, and the willows were swaying. The lake slightly rippled with the wind, catching the soft moonlight.
A big, locust tree stood proudly on the southeast corner of the lake, and a slim figure stood under it.
Emma had been standing there for half an hour. Looking at her reflection in the water, she felt the back of her eyes burn once again. It had been a month, but she still could not stop thinking about Harrison.
Elena Lake was the place where she and Harrison met for the first time. Under this very locust tree that she was under right now, they fell in love at first sight. Harrison was an extraordinary man, elegant and gentle. He was the lover of Emma’s dreams.
Not long after they met, the two of them expressed their feelings for each other and decided to be together.
Not long after they met, the two of them expressed their feelings for each other and decided to be together.
Elena Lake became their dating place. They had agreed to come here on this date every month to relax and chat. It had become their little tradition of taking a rest and forgetting their troubles in life.
On their first anniversary, Harrison bought a pair of rings, which they put on necklaces and wore around their necks.
Harrison said that he would propose to Emma with the same pair of rings after she graduated.
Emma remembered being so overjoyed by that promise that she had tears in her eyes.
The two of them had worked together. Harrison wanted to become a famous star all over the country while Emma wanted to become a renowned, critically acclaimed director and make touching, game-changing movies.
They had supported each other every step of the way, and they had been inseparable.
But in just two years, everything had changed.
Men’s promises were like candy-coated shit. They looked pleasant on the surface, but in fact, they were particularly useless.
Emma took out the ring and gently rubbed it. It felt warm against her fingers.
The ring had always sat close to her heart, so it absorbed some of her warmth.
It reflected a little light from a nearby streetlamp, and it dazzled Emma. She smiled bitterly at the irony.
“I guess I’m the only one who’s keeping the ring.” Emma took off the necklace with the ring on it. “But I don’t want it anymore.”
She held the necklace in her hand and was about to throw it into the lake. When she raised her hand, she hesitated.
This was the symbol of her and Harrison’s love.
Harrison made her happy when they were together, and he gave her a vision of a happily married life with him where they would grow and thrive and love each other forever.
He gave her hope that imploded in vain.
Because of what happened between her and Harrison, Emma now thought that love was just an extravagant hope and that people who meant and committed to what they said only existed in fairy tales.
Tears welled up in Emma’s eyes. She clenched the ring in her hand. She hated herself for not having the heart to toss it.
She held the ring to her chest and wept.
Then, she heard footsteps approaching from behind.
Emma thought there were passers-by and did not want them to see her all tearful and dejected. She quickly wiped her tears away and tried to steady her breathing.
The southeast corner of Elena Lake was a romantic place, and many people visited often.
“So you’re really here, Emma Lin.”
A woman’s sardonic voice came from behind Emma.
She turned around and found Adela standing there with a smirk on her face.
“You still can’t forget Harrison, can you? Of course you can’t. Harrison is such an excellent man. How could he be forgotten just like that? Too bad he’s my fiance now. He no longer belongs to you.”
This was not Adela’s first time to declare her ownership of Harrison in front of Emma. Emma had put up with all her conceited blabbing in the past, but this time, she would not let things slide. “And I’m not trying to get him back, Miss Zhu. An aunt of mine once taught me to donate my old things to the less fortunate.” The aunt Emma mentioned referred to James’ mother, Angela.
She remembered what Angela said to her at the hospital.
Emma used to think that what Angela said was reasonable, and now she felt that it was pure truth.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Now standing next to Emma, Adela did not understand what she meant but still looked domineering.
Coincidentally, Harrison came over and asked, “Adela, why are you here?”
Hearing the familiar voice, Emma froze on her spot, her face turning pale.
She and Harrison had not seen each other for a month.
Emma only occasionally heard about him from the others in the crew. After all, he was an actor, a popular star supported by Adela.
“Emma?” Although Emma had her back to him, Harrison still recognized her.
He could not be more familiar with her. He would recognize her anywhere even if she was not facing him.
Looking at Emma’s back, Harrison remembered the first time he saw her right where she was standing. She was the beautiful girl by the river.

“Harrison.” Seeing that Harrison stared at Emma like he still had feelings for her, Adela was enraged. She walked up to him, held his arm, and hissed, “Harrison, didn’t I ask you to wait for me over there? Why are you here? Are you worried about me?”

Harrison frowned but still answered gently, “It’s dangerous at night. I followed you to make sure you’re okay.”
His words were kind and spoken with concern, but they plunged themselves like sharp blades in Emma’s heart.
Such tenderness used to belong to her. Harrison had promised that he would belong to her for the rest of his life.
But here he was now, being all loving to another girl right in front of her.
Emma slowly closed her eyes. Two lines of tears stained her cheeks as her body trembled against the chill evening wind.
“Oh, aren’t you so sweet?” Adela purred, leaning against Harrison. She looked smugly at Emma who just stood there and suffered in silence. “Honey, I have something important to tell Emma. Can you wait for me over there?”
Harrison swept his gaze at Emma absentmindedly and then back to his fiancee. “I want to wait for you here,” he answered.
He did not want to leave.
The girl he liked was still here.
Adela did not believe him at all. She knew that he just wanted to stay here because of Emma.
“We’re going to have some girl talk. We’ll be embarrassed if you stay here with us.” Adela gently pushed Harrison away.
Harrison stepped away reluctantly but eventually left.
When Harrison was gone, Adela faced Emma once again, folded her arms across her chest, and asked, “What did you mean by what you said earlier?”
“My aunt told me I should donate things I don’t want any more to people who need it more. I don’t want Harrison anymore, so he’s all yours. Because you’re a poor girl.”
Emma raised her voice when she answered Adela, so Harrison, who had not gone far enough away, heard everything.
He stopped and raised his head. A sharp pain flashed through his narrowed eyes.
“You’re going to pay for that, you bitch!” Adela raised her hand to slap Emma.
But before she could, Harrison rushed over and grabbed Emma by the wrist. His eyes glistened with unspoken pain as he said, “How could you, Emma? How could you say such insulting words?”
Without waiting for Emma’s answer, Harrison shoved Emma back, turned on his heel, grabbed Adela’s hand, and towed her away.
Emma found herself losing her balance and staggering backward from the force of Harrison’s push.
‘Insulting?’
Her heart ached.
‘If that was insulting, then I would’ve been insulted a thousand times!’
Harrison had grabbed her hand that held the ring, so when he pushed her away, Emma accidentally threw the ring into the lake. “No!” she screamed as she lurched backward.
She could only watch as the ring flew in the air. Struggling to regain her balance, she tripped over another stone, which put her in danger of falling into the water as well.
James, who happened to be nearby looking for Emma, saw her. He rushed over and held her in his arms.
He thought he was not going to make it in time.
He almost lost his balance and fell down himself.
Bang!
James landed on his back with Emma safe on top of him. He had cushioned her fall.
“Emma, are you okay?” Emma was so light that James did not even feel her fall on top of him. He was just fine. James was worried that she got hurt, but she did not.
Emma’s eyes were slightly red. She got up anxiously and went right back to the edge of the lake, not caring at all about the person who just saved her.
“The ring…”
That was her ring!
It was her love.
And the lake had swallowed it.
Emma was so heartbroken that she almost burst out crying again. She was about to jump into the lake.
She had to get her ring back.
