MY UNKNOWN HUSBAND, VOLUME 2 - Season 3 Episode 46
Emma blinked her eyes. She wondered John was referring to her.
Silence had fallen in the ward and she felt embarrassed again.
Mustering a smile, she took the initiative to nod at the people in the ward. It somehow helped in covering her mortification.
Then Emma walked over to Nina. “Are you feeling better? You told me that you were in the hospital a few days ago, and I wanted to come to see you, but my tutor didn’t grant me a leave. That’s why I can only come here today.”
Since that time when Nina had helped Emma regarding Harrison’s affair with another woman, they had been messaging each other often on WeChat.
Michelle was in Spring City and Nina couldn’t get in touch with her anyway, so Emma became her friend.
Still, no one could replace Michelle in Nina’s heart. All Nina wanted was to protect her friend, as well as the one that Michelle herself wished to protect.
“I’m fine. He’s the one who’s is hurt.” Nina cocked her head over to John, and Emma gave her greetings. “Mr. Shi.” She was polite.
Nina glanced at James, who immediately understood what the look meant. He hurriedly brought over a chair for Emma.
He was very gentle and appeared to be docile as he did so, his usual pompous and domineering bearing gone.
He looked like a man with an imposing appearance.
“Emma, have a seat.” James put the chair next to Emma.
John looked cold and evil when he was domineering, while James looked a little arrogant.
Nina pondered at James’ face. He was indeed devilishly attractive. No wonder rumors went around the college that he had a hoard of admirers all over the campus.
If she hadn’t met John first, she might have found herself romantically drawn to James instead.
Despite being the constant butt of the joke back at home, she couldn’t deny that John’s nephew was full of charm.
“I’ll go get you a glass of water.” Nina was aware that Emma had recently been avoiding James. The boy was just too aggressive, especially when he was after someone. He was very much like John in that respect.
This kind of approach, however, was frightening Emma.
“Okay, thank you.” Emma sat down without even sparing James a glance. She directed her gaze towards John, her expression courteous and respectful. “Mr. Shi, are you feeling better?”
James had been waiting for Emma to speak to him all this time, but she didn’t even look at him. Instead, it looked like she was more concerned with John. James immediately felt angry.
John knew his nephew had been trying to woo Emma for a month now. He also knew that James was no closer to succeeding than when he had started his one-sided courtship.
To him, James was rather useless.
“Yes.” Except for Nina, John rarely gave others a smile. Everybody else got his usual cold indifference.
But there was more to their unexpected visitor. He knew of course that Emma was Michelle’s cousin and a friend of his wife.
A person liked by his wife must be very nice, surely.
In addition to that, ever since James had started to pursue Emma, he had heard so much about the woman in question.
He even learned of the relationship between Harrison and Emma.
So in his typical fashion, John had someone investigate Emma. He found out that she possessed a good character, as well as a bad boyfriend.
Nevertheless, the person bearing the title of her boyfriend could easily be replaced.
“I remember you are Michelle’s cousin.” John spoke again. When Emma nodded her head, he continued. “You can also call me Uncle John as Michelle does. You don’t have to call me Mr. Shi.”
The girl was taken aback.
She felt fortunate enough to have a chance to meet John, a prominent figure in the city. But for her to be able to call him Uncle John, it was beyond her wildest imagination.
And she didn’t dare to do as he said.
“Uncle John…” James mumbled from the side, his voice laced with emotion. He was touched to see his uncle seeming to come to his aid in his romantic pursuit, and he tried to blink away his tears.
His little display didn’t escape John’s notice, and he smiled to himself. ‘This guy is getting smarter this time.’
It only stood to reason then, that his nephew got himself a smart wife.
“Here, drink some water.” Nina was back with a glass and she handed it to Emma.
The other girl accepted it gratefully and took a sip to calm herself down.
With James standing so close to her, she could practically smell his unique scent.
She only got hints of it now, but it had once engulfed and intoxicated her. That was the time he had kissed her.

Back when Emma and Harrison used to date, they made no other physical contact besides holding hands.
She had never kissed a man.
And then James crashed into her life, and on their very first meeting, he just went ahead and snatched her first kiss. She was so angry then that she had slapped him without much thought.
In hindsight, though, perhaps she had hit him too lightly. Since then, whenever James was failing an argument with her, he would just swoop in for a kiss.
Not that it did anything to help his case, because his behavior only led Emma to think of him as a rogue.
A few more gulps of water had relaxed Emily, and she smiled at her friend. “Nina, since you and your husband seem to be fine and well into recovery, I’ll be taking my leave. I’ll come again and see you another day.”
“Another day? When?” Emma had only said that last bit to be polite, but James latched onto it and even interrupted the women who were supposed to be exchanging goodbyes.
He had no choice; she had been hiding from him these days, and he never got a chance to even meet her. He had so much to say.
James knew that if he just let her go like this, she would run off and hide again.
But he could get to see her during her hospital visits to Nina. He had nothing else to do anyway, so he could just hang around whenever Emma came by. He would be glad to even just sit in a corner and watch them chat.
He would be happy as long as he got to see her.
It was one of the few things that made him happy.
It was much more interesting than going out with his friends.
Emma bit her lips and said nothing. Finally, Angela couldn’t stand it anymore. She wondered why his son was so stupid.
She began to worry; it looked like it was very difficult for James to get a girlfriend, let alone a wife to start a family with. Of course, she decided to help him.
“Hello, Miss Lin.” She walked over and the girl immediately stood and greeted her with a smile. “Hello.”
Angela took a moment to inspect her, arriving at the conclusion that Emma was a good-looking girl with a literary temperament.
She had been in the upper class of B City for more than 20 years and had the ability to judge people accurately.
She knew that Emma was a good girl. Angela felt delighted that her son had at least chosen a nice girl.
“Hello, I’m James’ mother. It’s very nice to meet you.” The socialite served the ball from her court.
She couldn’t pass up such a good opportunity.
“Hello, Auntie. My name is Emma Lin. I’m a friend of Nina.” Emma braved through her embarrassment and managed to speak with grace.
Judging from her nerves, though, Angela correctly deduced that her son had yet to establish a good impression upon the girl.
That didn’t mean she would give up easily. Angela’s tone became more enthusiastic.
“How do you spell your name? E-M-A, Ema, right?”
Emma opened her mouth to reply, but James cut in and explained for her. “No. E-M-M-A, Emma. The name was originally a short form of Germanic names that began with the element ermen meaning ‘whole’ or ‘universal.’ It was introduced to England by Emma of Normandy.”
His words stunned everyone in the room.
James was notorious for hating to read the most, but here he was, spouting knowledge about the origin of the word “Emma.” He was eloquent about it, too.
Learning all that couldn’t have been easy for him.
Emma looked around the room at the people’s surprised faces. She didn’t quite understand it; nothing particularly unusual had happened anyway.
She didn’t think there was anything specifically wrong with her today either. She smiled wide in an attempt to mask the flush on her cheeks. “That is indeed the origin of my name, yes.”
“See? I’m right. You all don’t believe me.”

James didn’t know that he was just a man with slight talent and superficial learning in the eyes of his family.
He thought that his family members were surprised by the origin and meaning of Emma’s name.
He thought so because he was also surprised at the beginning.
Angela was excited. It looked like her son had grown up.
She used to think that James was rather dull, and he had detested studying more than anything. It appeared that they had been wrong with their assumptions. He only needed the right person to motivate him to make progress.
