MY UNKNOWN HUSBAND, VOLUME 2 - Season 3 Episode 40
The weather in May was a little erratic.
It was sunny just yesterday, but it was raining cats and dogs at the moment.
Heavy raindrops blown by the wind pattered against the glass window.
Outside, a fog had descended upon the scenery, painting it in gloom.
Loud thunder boomed through the sky, coupled with the occasional streak of lightning.
Feeling a little chilly, Nina threw herself into John’s arms and settled into the warm cocoon that was him. Still asleep, she rested one of her hands on top of his broad chest.
John smiled as he took it and pressed her fingers against his lips. Then he turned to look at the clock hanging on the wall.
It was seven o’clock in the morning.
It was the fifth day of their stay in the hospital.
Only five days, and yet tremendous changes had already taken place in the world outside. The most prominent of the stories hounding the news these days was the marriage between the Ye and Song families. The union caused the stock market value of both Ye Group and Song Group to rise.
Adrian had gradually revealed a sharp edge and did his best to gain a firm foothold within the Song Group. Vivian, on the other hand, was lacking in the boldness department, which led to the Ye Group running into some trouble.
In order to turn the tide, she had sought out Adrian to forge an agreement, and pretty soon the two giants in Lexingport City were working on the same project. It caught the attention of the media, and the hype it garnered helped to bring everything under control.
Everything seemed to be back on track. Knock! Knock! Knock!
Someone was at the door.
It was Helen, and she came with breakfast.
As soon as she opened the box she brought, the smell of stewed trotter wafted into the room.
Nina sniffed in her dream and suddenly opened her eyes. Smelling the fresh and strong smell of the soup, she felt happy.
“It smells so good. Helen, what soup did you cook?” Nina was feeling s little greedy, and she hurriedly lifted the quilt and got out of bed.
John remained on the bed, lamenting at how empty his arms felt empty as soon as Nina was gone.
This was the fourth time.
As soon as Helen entered the room with food, Nina would run out of his arms in haste. He would then be demoted into something nonexistent in her eyes, and she would only remember him once she was full.
“Ahem…” John cleared his throat, reminding his wife of his very tangible existence.
Nina turned to look at him and smile. “I didn’t forget you this time. Look, I’m ladling soup for you.”
He had a nagging suspicion, however, that she was in fact getting a serving for herself.
“Come here.” John waved at her, and Nina walked towards him obediently. She sat on the bed and began feeding him. This was a habit that the couple had managed to develop recently.
No matter what food Nina chose, she would dutifully feed John his portion. After all, he had been so badly injured in order to save her. She needed to take very good care of him.
In the midst of their quiet meal, another knock came to the door.
It was still so early in the morning, and the door opened to reveal James. “Uncle John, I have something important to tell you. Grandpa and others found out that you are injured and they’re on their way here.”
He took a deep breath before continuing, “It’s really not my fault. I didn’t say anything. Grandpa got the information through his own means. I have nothing to do with it.”
“Okay.” John wasn’t surprised. For his situation to have remained a secret from the old man for five days was already an achievement.
No sooner had James settled into a seat in the room than Sam came bearing down the door.
His eyes instantly flew to Nina, and he strode to the bedside in a huff. Without even sparing a glance at John, he pulled Nina up and looked her down from head to toe.
“Nina, are you okay? Have you recovered? I heard that you were bitten by a snake and fell off the building. I was almost scared to death. Are you all right now?”
Nina opened her mouth to answer, but before she could say a word, Sam glared at the patient on the bed and snapped, “Why are you still lying on the bed? Get off and let Nina take a rest. Don’t you know she’s injured? Why did you ask her to serve you and feed you soup?”
Sam banged his walking stick on the floor, looking indignant.
John was speechless.
It was him who was hurt.

“Dad, it’s not me who is injured, it’s John. He got hurt in order to save me.” Nina spoke hurriedly, her voice ridden with guilt, her eyes pleading.

John was Sam’s own flesh and blood anyway. He would definitely be more concerned for his son’s welfare when the misunderstandings were cleared up.
Nina thought it might be a good time to profusely apologize for inadvertently causing John’s condition, but once again she was interrupted by Sam. “He’s your husband, this is expected of him. Who else would he get hurt for if not you?”
It sounded very much as though Sam didn’t care about John at all. The old man paused only for a beat before turning back to Nina, his eyes full of concern. “What about you? Are you hurt? Did John protect you well?”
At this point, Nina was rendered speechless as well.
The scene was unfolding in a totally opposite direction from what she had initially expected.
She glanced over Sam’s shoulder to look at John. His handsome face was still as expressionless as ever, and his eyes were closed. He was obviously used to his father being like this.
Feeling sorry for him, Nina looked Sam in the eye. “Dad, the truth is that he is seriously injured.”
But Sam only gave another snort and glared at his son. “He won’t die.”
And for the second time in the space of less than an hour, Nina was speechless.
That sounded familiar.
John had said those exact same words to her. More than once. He always seemed to say it out of anger, and to Nina it always sounded like he was blaming her. But she realized now that it was just another one of his weird ways to show how much he cared about her.
As expected, John slowly opened his eyes and glanced at Sam towering over him.
Then he called out to James, who was innocently enjoying his meal. “Send your grandfather back.”
“What? Okay.” James drank a last mouthful of the soup and wiped his mouth with a napkin.
For his part, Sam made no protests.
Instead, he took Nina’s hand and gave her a piece of advice. “It’s raining heavily outside. John may not sleep well at night and occasionally have nightmares. Pay more attention to him and don’t leave him alone.”
Nina glanced sideways at the man on the bed, and nodded with concern in her eyes.
The rain was in fact so heavy that it didn’t stop until night.
It fell in a steady pour, and if one looked out the window, it would look like a cast sea had formed down below.
After hearing Sam’s parting words that morning, Nina had been paying careful attention to John’s every movement. Thankfully, nothing unusual happened.
But she didn’t let her guard down. Now she was back within John’s arms, and even though her eyes were closed and she was comfortable, sleep wasn’t coming.
The rain kept pouring. The hospital room was dark. It was quiet, and all she could hear was the steady breathing and the even heartbeats of the man beside her.
This peace didn’t last long. The rain began to fall hard, and as if on cue, John’s heartbeat also started to pick up its pace. His breathing became short and labored, too.
“John. John, what’s wrong?” Nina sat up and reached to turn the bedside lamp on. The warm orange glow fell on John’s face, revealing beads of sweat on his forehead.
His eyebrows were etched with a tight frown, and he looked like he was struggling in his sleep. His breathing grew even more panicked, as though someone was strangling him.
Nina knew he was having a terrible nightmare.
It appeared that every time it rained, he would have nightmares.
“John. Wake up.” Nina was starting to feel a burning anxiety. She stretched out her hands, intending to shake him awake.
Before she could even touch him, his big and powerful hand grabbed her wrist in a vise grip.
John abruptly opened his eyes. An endless darkness swirled within those deep pools, as well as a hint of some cold horror.
His grip was tightening by the second, even as his eyes took on the look of a wild beast being threatened. He looked a lot like he could pounce and dispose of her any moment now.
A chill ran down Nina’s spine, and her whole body grew cold.
She had never seen John like this before. His cold and frightening eyes were filled with panic, and his overly vigilant expression made Nina’s heart ache.
What did John dream of?
What had he suffered through in the past?
