It never occurred to Kristina that Albert would ever misunderstand her like this. It felt horrible.
The two of them continued to argue relentlessly.
As they fought, Albert felt himself getting a head-splitting headache. He started to get flashbacks of when his mother beat and scolded him as a child. His painful past was like a dark, gloomy cloud hanging over his head.
It felt so heavy that he couldn’t breathe.
Albert couldn’t tell whether the person in front of him was his mother, who hurt him as a child, or his lover, who had saved him from the misery.
For many years, he hid the pain that he got from his family under lock and key inside his head. However, it was basically like a time bomb. If someone triggered it, the bomb would explode and hurt everyone within the radius.
Albert wanted to murder someone. He glanced at the fruit knife next to him, then looked at Kristina.
As if caught in a trance, Albert grabbed the knife and stabbed Kristina without hesitation.
The sharp blade pierced through the cloth and flesh, eliciting a shocked gasp from Kristina. Albert’s eyes widened as if he was just waking up from the trance.
The dark clouds seemed to have dissipated; Albert realized he had done, but it was too late. He had already stabbed Kristina’s stomach. He could only watch in horror as the blood started to soak her clothes.
Kristina’s eyes also widened. The pain from her belly was excruciating; the fear of dying from the stab wound had her trembling.
“Albert…” Tears rolled down from Kristina’s eyes. She knew he didn’t mean to do that, but she really felt hurt.
Her heart hurt, too.
“Albert…” Tears rolled down from Kristina’s eyes. She knew he didn’t mean to do that, but she really felt hurt.
Her heart hurt, too.
Albert came back to his senses, and shakily held up his hand. The pain in Kristina’s eyes made his heart drop to his stomach. He felt as if he had forgotten how to breathe.
“Kristina…I… I didn’t mean it. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry…”
In a panic, Albert turned around and ran away.
Despite the wound, Kristina managed to make her way to the sofa.
Albert’s figure disappeared at the door. It was dark outside, and it seemed that he didn’t even look back.
If Albert had looked back even for just a second, Kristina would feel relieved, but he didn’t do that.
In the end, Albert was gone, and Kristina’s house was empty.
Kristina was the only one left in the big living room. She was feeling pain in both her heart and her wound. She thought that she was going to die.
If Kristina went to the hospital in time, she would not die.
But she didn’t feel like there was any point in saving herself. She was heartbroken. She chose not to ask for help.
As she accepted her fate, she suddenly heard loud footsteps coming from the door. She thought that Albert came back for her but sadly, it wasn’t him.
Clutching her stomach, Kristina felt her life slowly fading away.
Her vision started to blur as she went in and out of consciousness. She caught a glimpse of muddy footprints on the wool carpet. ‘The muddy footprints could be held as evidence against Albert.’
If she died, Noah would definitely investigate it thoroughly.
Albert would be charged with negligent homicide and be sentenced to three to seven years of imprisonment, possibly even more.
It took Albert a lot of effort to get to where he was now. If the case was settled, it would definitely affect his reputation negatively. The other people of the Song family would surely take the opportunity to seize power for themselves.
Kristina couldn’t allow such a thing to happen.
Wincing, she got up from the couch and dragged her heavy body across the room. She had to act quickly; she couldn’t die just yet.
Swiftly, she burned down the carpet that had Albert’s footprints. She wrote farewell letters to Noah and Nina and wrote down her last will. She needed to make this look like a suicide.
She took out her phone and asked Nina to have dinner with her. Then she told Albert she was fine and asked him to go to the appointed Western restaurant to look for Nina.
Kristina set another timed message and restored the phone to its factory settings.
After turning on the air conditioner, Kristina threw the remote control under the sofa and smiled to herself.
She had done all that she could physically do.
There was only one last step left.
As she leaned against the sofa, she gently wiped the fingerprints on the fruit knife with a white handkerchief. She winced in pain as she wiped, but Kristina knew she couldn’t give up now.

Taking deep breaths, she gripped the handle of the knife tightly and braced herself. Then, she pushed the blade further into her body. She cried out in pain.

There were only a few seconds left in her life.
When she was done, Kristina slowly tilted her head and looked at the closed door. Nostalgia and reluctance swept over her.
Memories of the past flooded her mind. She remembered how she always used to wait for Albert in this position. She would tilt her head a little to watch the door, and she would see him arrive from work.
But now, she knew there was no use in waiting anymore.
There was no future for her anymore. She wouldn’t be able to wait anymore. In a few years, Albert would have another woman waiting for him at home.
The taste of blood filled her mouth. She gasped loudly as if taking her last breaths. Then, she closed her eyes and exhaled gently.
At that moment, her whole life flashed before her eyes like it was a movie. Her mind was flooded with memories of her and Albert together.
She couldn’t believe that she hesitated for a second earlier! As she recalled all their memories together, Kristina was sure that she had no regrets. She didn’t want Albert to suffer, even a little bit. His efforts over the years could turn to waste if she didn’t do anything.
So, she chose to fake this suicide to cover for him.
When her eyelids gradually closed, Kristina murmured with her last few breaths, “Albert, you said you would protect me for the rest of my life, and you did it.
But I didn’t expect that the rest of my life would be so short.
Albert, I still wish you happiness.
I hope you’ll be happy even if I’m not there anymore.”
Noah recalled what had happened that night. His eyes were fixed on a light bulb. The more he stared, the more the white halo around the bulb grew larger, blurring his vision.
Hiding in John’s arms, Nina grabbed his collar with both hands and choked with sobs.
His heart broke with her. He gently patted her thin waist and held her tight in his arms.
Suddenly, he caught Isabella looking at them suspiciously.
John glanced at Isabella and raised his eyebrows. She immediately looked away in a panic.
‘That was close!
Did Mr. Shi discover anything?’
Isabella thought to herself, feeling a little anxious.
Fearing that John had become suspicious of her, Isabella casually walked away and saw Ford on her way out.
When Ford came in and noticed his boss sitting on the floor, he frowned and whispered something in Albert’s ear.
Albert’s eyes lit up in interest. “Lock up Mr. and Mrs. Shi and send Noah away,” he ordered.
“Yes, sir.” Then Ford turned to them and stated, “Mr. and Mrs. Shi, this way, please.”
Noah stopped Albert and said, “Didn’t you promise me that you will let them leave?”
Albert stood still and replied, “I’m not going abroad. They will stay here for a few more days.”
He didn’t feel like going abroad.
He just wanted to stay with Kristina.
As for Nina and John, they had to stay. Albert wanted to observe Nina’s reaction after taking M.C. and see if would experience any side effects.
When Albert finished that last thing, he would let them go.
John and Nina went to the dark storage room again. Ford forced Noah to leave.
During the night, Nina finally calmed down. She blinked her eyes and looked up at John. She asked shakily, “If there is a misunderstanding between us one day, will you hurt me too?”
“There will be no misunderstanding between us.” John wiped the tears on her face.
“What if there is?” Somehow, Nina became sentimental, not like herself in the past.
After all, misunderstandings were scary and could end up hurting their relationship.
Knowing that she lacked a sense of security, John gave her a reassuring embrace and whispered, “If we do have one, it must be my fault.”
