“Yaoyao, it’s me. Everything’s fine,” Lu Xingzhi lowered his voice and spoke softly into her ear.

Jiang Yao opened her eyes and looked at him as if she was trying to confirm if it was him. Then, without saying a word, she closed her eyes and went back to sleep. She looked exhausted.

It was not difficult to sleep for a few hours. It felt as if the sun had risen just as she opened her eyes to think about something.

When it was close to six o’clock, more and more doctors and nurses were outside. When Jiang Yao opened her eyes, the doctor pushed the door open and walked into the room.

“You just woke up? You must have slept well. How do you feel?” When the doctor saw the patient rubbing her eyes, he smiled at her. When he saw her eyes darting around the ward, he smiled and said, “Looking for your husband? He is downstairs with his friend.”

“Oh,” Jiang Yao replied before she sat up. She had taken another dose of medicine the previous night and felt much better after waking up in the morning. Her stomach was no longer painful. If it were not for the fact that she did not have much strength, she would have thought she could be discharged from the hospital and go home.

Jiang Yao was very cooperative when she saw that the doctor wanted to perform a medical examination on her. After the doctor was done, she said gently, “I feel fine. But I don’t have much strength in my body. I should feel better after resting for another day or two.”

“Yes,” the doctor said, adjusting his eyes. “You’re a doctor too, so I won’t bother you with the details. You should understand what’s going on.”

That was the second time Jiang Yao was in that hospital. Even though she had not gone to the obstetrics and gynecology department, that doctor had seen Jiang Yao before that.

The two talked for a while before Lu Xingzhi entered the room. The doctor greeted him before he left. Jiang Yao felt touched. The doctor chatted with her because he was probably worried that the empty ward would affect her mood.

“You look a little more energetic than yesterday.”

Lu Xingzhi walked the doctor to the door before turning back. Since Jiang Yao’s complexion was much better, he heaved a sigh of relief. “Breakfast is here. Brush your teeth and eat something. Mom and Dad have already rushed over from the train station.”

“They took the train last night?”

Lu Xingzhi had wanted them to take the earliest plane that day, but they could not rest well at home without knowing more about Jiang Yao’s condition. So, they decided to take an overnight train.

Jiang Yao was still thinking about the other pregnant women. She had slept soundly the previous night, so she had not had a chance to ask Lu Xingzhi about the situation.

Lu Xingzhi said, “The woman who was one-month pregnant had a miscarriage. They had to induce labor for the woman who was six months pregnant, but the baby died after less than an hour. However, they managed to do a caesarian surgery on the woman, who was already close to her due. The baby is doing fine. The man who could only see his son for half an hour cried for a long time last night.”

The premature baby only lived for less than an hour. Understandably, the baby’s parents’ pain was greater than the parents who lost their baby after only one month of pregnancy.

After the child’s heart stopped beating and he stopped breathing, the father carried the baby out of the incubator and hugged him tightly for a long time, unwilling to let go.
