Dale handed an exquisite mahogany box to the old lady, drawing the attention of everyone else in the

room.

The old lady bowed her head and opened the box, saying, “Tabatha, you’ve suffered a lot in the Hinton

family over the years. You’re a good girl, and grandma knows it. This jade bracelet was made from the

best jade that Grandpa Walter chose when he went to gamble on jade in Northern Myanmar. There are

two pairs of this bracelet. I gave one pair to William’s mother, and gave it to your sister-in-law when

Hermosa was born a few years ago. This pair was originally meant to be given to you by Walter’s

mother, but Walter’s mother passed away years ago. So now, I can only give it to you myself.”

Saying so, the old lady took out a pair of brightly colored jade bracelets and placed them in the palm of

my hand.
