Nicole quickly looked away, then walked over to Colton before handing him her wallet. “Here’s your wallet, Mr. Gardner; please check that there’s nothing missing from it. If there’s nothing, I’ll leave first,” she said in one breath.

However, just as she was about to leave, Queenie called out to her, asking, “Why are you here, sis?” Shouldn’t Nicole have completely disappeared? Why is she here all of a sudden, appearing before Colton with her wallet in hand, no less?! A vicious glint flashed in her eyes. She was looking for an outlet to vent after being scolded by Colton just now, and here was Nicole, coming straight at her!

Nicole froze at Queenie’s words. Not wanting to have anything to do with the Andersons, she gave a distant smile, saying, “Sorry, but you mistook me for the wrong person.”

Just as she was about to leave, Queenie shouted loudly from behind, “It’s been five years since you left, sis.” Daddy misses you so much. Can you please come home when you’re free?”

As soon as Queenie said this, a buzz of gossip immediately broke out in the crowd.

“So this is the illegitimate daughter of the Anderson Family?”

“I heard that she shamelessly slept with a guy for peanuts several years ago…”

“Tsk, tsk… Keep your voice down! The other Anderson is still here.”

Hearing her words, Queenie was inwardly delighted. After all, she was the one who spread all these rumors around. The former eldest daughter of the Anderson Family is now a prostitute who is rejected by everyone! That’s exactly what I want. I want Nicole to be completely discredited and live like a stray dog. Only then will I be happy!

On the other hand, Nicole trembled with anger as she heard the crowd’s comments. Illegitimate daughter? How am I an illegitimate daughter? My mother was William Anderson’s first wife! It seems that there have been a lot of false rumors spread about me in recent years.

Nicole could bear anything but insults directed at her mother. With her eyes slightly darkened, she turned around and uttered, emphasizing each word, “Is that so? I’ve been busy these past few years, and besides, I thought the Anderson Family had long forgotten me, seeing as you never looked for me, nor did you ever call me.” At this moment, her clear and bright eyes narrowed slightly with a cold glint. Looking at those who were whispering about her now, she emphasized loudly, “My mother was William Anderson’s first wife, and I was already eight years old when they divorced. On the other hand, this younger sister of mine is only a few months younger than me. Anyone with a brain should be able to tell who the illegitimate daughter here is.” When Queenie saw how Nicole held her head high, a layer of mist instantly covered her eyes, as if the latter was bullying her. “Sister.” Her voice began to take on a sobbing note. “I wasn’t trying to insinuate anything. I was just asking you to come home for a visit.”

Nicole’s lips curled into a sneer. “I wasn’t implying anything either. I was just explaining the Anderson Family’s situation to those who are unaware of the truth, so that they won’t be brainwashed by some false rumors.”

As soon as Nicole finished her sentence, she felt a meaningful gaze on her; she followed the gaze to find that it was Colton’s. This guy had never said a word from beginning to end. His eyes were dark and unfathomable, and the corner of his mouth was lifted in a slight smile. He obviously seemed to be rejoicing in what was happening.

Nicole wasn’t interested in making a spectacle of herself, so she turned around and quickly left.

It wasn’t until she closed the door to shut herself off from the world inside that she realized her heart was beating fast. As if it were going to jump out of her chest. However, it wasn’t because she was afraid of Queenie; it was just because she was suppressing her anger. It was because of this woman that my mother died! I will never let Queenie get away—and so will everyone in the Anderson Family! Clenching her fists, she stood in place to regain her composure until her face returned to its usual expressionless expression.

When Nicole returned home, Hayden was already asleep. When she saw the small figure curled up on the bed, her heart suddenly calmed; she stepped forward and kissed her son’s sleeping face as a smile of gratification lifted the corners of her mouth. Thankfully, I am no longer alone now. I still have Hayden, my darling…
