As soon as she voiced her question, she thought, Oh, silly me, what was I expecting?
Colton looked at her without answering her question. He simply replied, “Miss Lisa, do you have no idea who your son’s biological father is?”

Judging by her expression, she obviously regretted asking the question in the heat of the moment. As her excitement subsided, her face began to turn red. She stammered, “I-I mean, it was a thoughtless question. Of course I know who his father is.”

“Oh?” Colton blurted out in a strained voice. At that, he narrowed his eyes. With increased volume and a somewhat teasing tone, he asked smilingly, “So who is the boy’s father?”

Nicole felt utterly frustrated with her suspense, dying to find out the results of the paternity test. Although she was certain that Hayden was not Colton’s son, she wanted to hear explicit confirmation from the man.

As if he could read her mind, he threw a beam. “Actually, Hayden is not my son. The kid was just being a kid.”

Oddly enough, Nicole let out a sigh of relief. Even she was weirded out by her internal celebration. “Well, kids, right? I hope you didn’t take that to heart.”

“It’s okay. I understand,” he replied generously.

Just as they were about to continue discussing business, Nicole’s phone on the couch vibrated. Although she was going to ignore it, her heart fluttered strangely as her eyelid twitched. She picked up the phone and glanced at it, only to find it was a call from her son. Excusing herself, she turned to Colton. “Excuse me, President Gardner. I have to take this.” Finished, she held the phone close to her ear.

Before she could ask her son what had happened, she heard his panicked voice. “Mom, some thugs came to our house and kept banging on the door!”

Immediately, she became anxious. Since there had been no residents living in her current house for quite some time, she hadn’t bothered to install a burglar-proof door. Now, all that stood between her son and the “thugs” was a simple wooden door.

“Hayden, block the door with anything you can lift and go hide in the house. I’ll be right back. Remember, don’t make any noise.”

“I think they’re about to come in, Mom.” Hayden suppressed his voice. No matter how mature he was, he was, after all, just a child who had no idea what to do in such a circumstance.

At that instant, a cold feeling welled up in her body and crawled to her heart as her lips trembled uncontrollably. I can’t let anything happen to Hayden!

“Hayden, find a place and hide. I’m coming back now.” Perhaps it was due to the overwhelming disturbance in her mind, but as she was saying these words, tears began to well up in her eyes and stream down her cheeks. She bit her lips. How did this happen? Why would someone want to kidnap my son? She had never felt as helpless as she did now. Even at the fastest speed, it would take at least an hour to travel the distance between her home and the Crown Hotel, where the annual F&M Apparel dinner was being held.

Grabbing her phone, just as she was about to say something, she heard a commotion on the other end of the line.

“Mom, save me!” Hayden sobbed with her suppressed groan, followed by the voices of several men.

The voices gradually became inaudible before the call ended.

“Hayden, Hayden!” Nicole yelled into her phone, only to be met with silence. Worried, she no longer cared about the meeting and tried to look for Zachary, but he was nowhere to be found after being summoned.

On the other hand, Colton could figure out what happened based on her panicked look and her conversation. At the same time, he offered his help with extreme elegance. “Let’s go check it out. I’ll drive.”

Knowing that the matter was urgent, Colton didn’t stop walking as they exited the building. As soon as they tacitly got into the car and fastened their seatbelts, the man stepped on the accelerator and sped off.

Holding her phone, Nicole continuously dialed her son’s number, but her phone seemed to be turned off, as her calls went unanswered. She raised her hand and grabbed her hair in agitation. Since giving birth to Hayden, this was the first time she had felt so helpless and distressed.

No, please don’t let anything happen to Hayden! Or else, I wouldn’t be able to live.
