Alpha Dom and His Human Surrogate - Season 5 Episode 99
Cora
Images of Ariel’s future appear in quick flashes, and somehow I get the impression that the Goddess is eager to share these glimpses of her life.
The ones that appear first are the ones I expected, especially after seeing some of Rafe’s childhood footage and hearing about the ones Ella and Sinclair saw during Jesse’s baptism. But these focus on an angelic little girl with rose-gold hair who is just… ridiculously happy.
My ears fill almost instantly with tears watching her run around and play with the kids who are clearly Rafe and Jesse. Ariel – she’s always at the center of their games, always laughing so hard her eyes are barely open above her rosy cheeks. In one snap, Jesse is climbing up a tree branch and reaching out a hand to her as Rafe pulls her up from below. In another, Ariel is curled up between her brother and cousin, all wrapped up in a big blanket as the three of them sit around a campfire, eyes wide and bright as they roast marshmallows and stare in wonder at Roger, who is clearly in the middle of telling a scary story.
Roger laughs beside me at the sight and I walk over to them as we learn more about her life as she grows up, her teenage years as she becomes the princess of the Nation, as she grows into a beautiful and graceful young woman, yet still full of pranks, running through the halls of the palace with her brother and Jesse chasing after her.
And then I gasp a little at the sight of our little girl dressed as a bride.
My hand goes to my mouth, because she looks so young and so scared.
My stomach drops as I see her what seems like a moment later, her back against a door as she sobs into her wedding dress while two young men who are clearly my son and nephew jump up and down beside her.
The images move faster than I can really process below, but my hand drops from my mouth and my jaw drops in amazement when I realize that
That she didn’t get married after all, but ran away, that she is…
She’s with Jesse and Rafe, as they attend some sort of military school dressed in fatigues, with their hair tied up under a cap, looking sort of… like a boy…
“Oh my God,” I mutter, and then laugh because it gets weirder after that.
Ariel, mixing potions in a chemistry class, eyes wide as one goes wrong and explodes in front of her…
Ariel, an expert sniper, crouches on top of a tower and hits a target that must be half a mile away.
Ariel, curled up in a chair by the fire, sitting on the lap of a very handsome young man whose jaw could cut glass and whose adorable dimples are
And the joy grows in me, because I know instantly, that this boy is his partner.
But then I gasp again because the image changes, and Ariel is staring at another powerfully built young man, glowering at her in some hallway made of stone, but she pushes him away forcefully and raises a finger to point at his face, a defiant snarl on her lips, looking very much like her mother –
And even as a small, surprised laugh leaves my mouth, anxiety twists in my stomach, because I know…
I know as much as I knew with the first guy, that this one is his mate too.
I can’t help it then, I look at my little niece, who is bubbling and looking at the moon.
Two predestined companions, like their father…
And suddenly, what the Goddess told me in my living room that day so many months ago…

It makes a lot of sense.
My eyes return to the images, which now pass even faster (too fast to capture them all) and I see our children training hard, laughing together, working to build their lives, helping each other and serving our nation.
The last image, however, persists.
Ariel, with Rafe and Jesse on either side as always and her two companions behind her. All together on a battlefield with Ariel in the center, magic flowing through her hands and passing to her brother, to her cousin.
Their faces are serious as they look at something gathering over them, a force I cannot see.
And then…
The image disperses. It disappears.
Roger and I stand still for a long moment, and only a small moan from Ariel’s tiny mouth brings me off of her.
“Poor baby, you must be cold,” I murmur, pulling her close and wrapping her in her blanket. Ariel rests her little head against me, closing her eyes and opening her mouth in a wide yawn.
“Wow,” Roger murmurs as he stares at our niece. “Wow, I wasn’t expecting that…”
I laugh a little, look at him and shake my head. “Me neither.”
“Damn, Ariel,” he says, laughing and running a surprised hand through his hair. “Looks like you have quite a story to tell.”
“Come on, baby,” I say, laughing and shaking my head. “Let’s tell your mom… just the things she absolutely needs to know.”
“Really?” Roger asks, raising his eyebrows at me.
“What are aunts for?” I say, shrugging and smiling at him. “A girl’s gotta have someone to keep her secrets.”
He laughs and puts his arm around me as we head back. But before we go, I look over my shoulder once more, smile at the moon, and send a mental thank you to my mother for her gift, for this glimpse into the future.

And the moonlight shines, just once, and I smile. Because I know she heard.

“Oh, they’re back, they’re back!” I gasp, setting my half-drunk glass of champagne down on a table and rushing forward when I see Cora and Roger emerging from the darkness of the forest with Ariel sleeping in Cora’s arms. Our gathered family and friends cheer, welcoming them back.
Cora smiles at me, her expression warm and rich as I run towards her.
“Tell me everything,” I gasp, taking my baby back and cradling her as I rest her tiny head in the crook of my elbow, looking up into her perfect, sleeping face.
“Well, wait for me,” Sinclair says, laughing as he joins our little circle with Jesse on one hip and Rafe on the other. “Honestly, Ella, I’m her father, too…”
“You should have been faster then,” I say, rolling my eyes.
“I am pregnant with two children…”
But I just ignore him and turn to Cora. “Go! Spill!”

“I don’t know, Ells,” he says, smiling at me and reaching out to take Jesse from Sinclair. “Honestly, as a mother? I’m not sure you want to know.”
My face turns pale with shock and terror and Roger scowls at his partner.
“Cora, don’t say it like that,” he says, giving her a half-hearted look before reaching out and placing a hand on my shoulder. “Seriously, Ella, everything was fine, nothing was wrong. I mean, both Jesse and Rafe showed us that there’s a war coming, and that affects Ariel’s life, just like it will affect ours. But seriously, all good news from the Goddess. She’s going to have an amazing life.”
“Really?” I gasp, hugging my daughter tightly and looking between my sister and her partner. “You wouldn’t lie to me? Is everything really okay?”
“It is,” Cora says, laughing and reaching out to gently touch my cheek.
I breathe a huge sigh of relief and look down at my little girl. “You had me scared, baby problem,” I murmur, running a finger down her soft little cheek. But then my mind goes back to what Cora said. “Wait,” I say, lifting my head. “What wouldn’t I want to know as a mother!?”
“I mean, I’ll tell you, sister, but aren’t there some things a mom should be unaware of?” Cora asks.
I tilt my head back and moan, honestly not knowing. “I don’t know, Cora, are there any!?”
She laughs and I look first at Sinclair, who shrugs, and then back at my sister.
“Come on,” Roger says, nodding toward the crowd of people waiting to congratulate us and toward the small refreshment table. “Let’s settle this with some champagne.”
Sinclair nods and I sigh, moving on with my family and reflecting on my choices as we accept our friends’ congratulations and let Henry hold the baby for a while, telling him of the good omens the Goddess has given us about his future.
“Okay,” I say, sidling up to Cora, my eyes on the baby in her grandfather’s arms. “If you think it’s going to stress me out… don’t tell me. But… give me a clue. Is it… like a disease? Or is she lonely? Oh, I really don’t want her to be lonely. Or –”
“It’s nothing like that, Ella,” Cora says, her eyes shining as she smiles at me. “She’s a very happy little girl and loves her early years. Ella, Jesse and Rafe are best friends and they stay together until their twenties, at least.”
“So,” I say, cocking my head and studying her. “What…”
“Let’s just say,” Cora says, her smile growing wider, “is she your little girl? Her love life is… tumultuous.”
“Oh my God,” I moan, but laugh as I cover my face with my hands and tilt it skyward. Because of that? A little heartbreak, a little drama? I mean, Cora’s right: I’m not sure I want to know the details. But I can handle that.
As I remove my hands from my face, I look up through the trees where the moon peeks through the leaves. “Oh mom,” I say, shaking my head a little. “What do you have in store for my little girl?”
“Very much,” Cora says, laughing and sipping champagne, as Jesse rests his sleepy head on her shoulder.
“So…” I say, leaning in close and whispering, not really wanting Sinclair to hear me because something in me tells me this Alpha dad isn’t ready to hear about his three-week-old daughter’s future love life, “did she… did she?” You see? Does she have a partner? NôvelDrama.Org owns this text.
Cora’s smile is bright, but a little wicked. I turn my head in curiosity. “Yes, Ella,” she says, nodding happily, “your little one… is mated.”
I give a little squeal of delight and my face breaks out into a smile as I approach. “Is he… is he cute?”
“Very cute,” Cora says, leaning in to share the secret and wrinkling her nose as she serves the plates. “Really cute, Ella, big time.”
I squeal again, spinning around in a happy little circle. “So, you were able to see… I mean, a timeline of when she met him!?”
Cora, however, simply shakes her head. “I don’t think I should say anything else,” she says, shrugging. “I mean, I will if you want, Ella, but…” she now turns her smile to our little girl. “I think… maybe just let her live her life. Don’t you want to be surprised?”
“Yeah,” I sigh, leaning on my sister’s other shoulder with a frown, even though happiness is coursing through me. “I hate it when you’re all wise.”
“It’s the burden I carry,” she sighs, leaning her head against mine. Because if you don’t know, that means you don’t have to keep the secret from Sinclair. Because if he knows? She lets out a sigh. “Her, if he knew what I know, I’d lock her in a tower. Like a princess in a fairy tale.”
“Damn,” I say, pursing my lips, although I can’t help but be excited for my girl’s future, although I’m also very willing to bottle up all that drama for twenty years. “The baby issues are right.”
“Baby issues,” Cora says with a sigh and nods, “you’re absolutely right.”
